Yes, I sold the tahoe and got another car. Tahoe needed a few small things that I didnt feel like dicking with, so for not much more that what it would have cost me to do the maintenance it needed, I upgraded 4 years into an 03 Explorer SportTrac. Original owner drove from Stallis to Jefferson every day for work, so it's pretty much ALL hwy miles, super clean from top to bottom. Even the techs at work were in awe how clean the underbody was. Doesn't even look like a typical wisconsin car!

Anyways, it's got 166K on it, and all it needs are the tires balanced and the drivers side rocker panel needs a clip that fell out.

Cool. I'd drive one of those!

I love this thing. I always used to make fun of them, but after driving this one, I absolutely love it! It's super practical, and compared to the tahoe, gets pretty decent mileage. 17 so far on this tank and that's with the 4:11 gears this one has. It's the XLT Premium/Sport with the gears, HD Tow package, and some upgraded bits in the interior.

it's surprisingly clean. Underneath is damn near spotless. Nothing is rusting, not a single drip, leak, or seep.

Sweet ride I just hope with that mileage that you never have a problem with that POS 4.0 SOHC and its ridiculous timing chain and guide system.
Probably one of the worst engines Ford has ever used IMO.

Maybe I'm all wet and she has the 4.6. :)

iirc, the 4.6 didn't come in the sport trac until the '07 model year.

I always held the 4.0 SOHC ford in decent esteem....what were the general problems it had?

I rented a ford explorer 2wd, 4.0, 3.73 gears, and it was decent...not the worst mileage on the road, decent quick for a six banger SUV. The 2wd sucked when we got caught in a bad storm though, lol.

no, it's the 4.0 but runs quiet as can be.

I think its a Cologne engine named in Ford fashion after that place it was built.
The main problem was that it was an engine that dated to the pinto and euro capri era and has been retrofitted with overhead cams, a cam in the block, some have a little balance shaft next to the mains and of course the timing chain in the back of the engine that spins the right overhead cam via the cam in block.

3-4 chains and their associated tensioners, cam in block (jackshaft ?)runs the oil pump as well as the right cam.
Special tool city, later models are more reliable as a Ford fan I steer everyone away from that engine as its not a case of if but when will something will go awry.
4.6 DOHC's are fisher price plastic guide galore as well but seem to have alomost no problems when compred to the 4.0 SOHC.

I believe the OP has a good chance as he does not keep cars that long, it has higher miles maybe it was already fixed and he said she runs quiet.
Basically if it goes bad your got metal and plastic fines all over and IMO that engines toast, Im sure a guy could cobble one back together if it was not too long.
I got all the special tools and wont work on em anymore, too timebombish.

I thought the early 4.0 OHV's were bad until the early 4.0 SOHC's came along. Im sure quite a few early 4.0 OHV and Early 4.0 SOHC made CRV and 4 Runner drivers out of old Ford folks.

From what I have seen there were no real problems with that engine, just like the 3.0 and the 4 cyl that was in the ranger, lasts longer than the body

don't worry he won't have it long enough for any probelms. lol.

Step up man!!! I've had that many CAMARO'S alone. Not counting any of the other cars, hahaha.

Those are fun toys man. I think it's super practical like you said. Smaller than an Avalanche but with the same benefits.

my buddy picked up an 02 sport trac. decent truck. he only has 90k miles and already had to do both left ball joints and both front wheel bearings since owning it. he gets about the same mpg as what you are reporting with the same gearing

johnny--2k

Well, as I said, the truck runs super quiet and great, and the guy took great car of it, with maintenance galore. I'm wondering if I can call hiller and get the service records for it since thats where he did all the service.

As for the HID's, I'm goin with the ones Tony sells as I already have the kits in my other car. Just need one more kit for the fogs, and new bulbs for the lows.

I have a 9006 kit from the tahoe, but it's not the same for the ST, so I need to replace that one. If you want it, let me know...

Johnny,

you probably have to have the previous owner call and do that. We don't give out records at Harley unless you are the actual guy who brought the bike in.

for warranty/recall stuff, yes, I can get that, but not routine maint, timing chain, brakes, balljoints, etc...

Only one warranty repair, for the power mirrors not working. harness in the door panel got disconnected.

No, that honor goes to the 3.8 V6 the Fox wagons and sedans had in the 80s.

I'm sorry, but IMO the 3.8 and 4.2 even with their inferior head clamping is a better engine. Less chance of the HG killing the engine than valve piston interference and metal fines thru the oil. :crying

Looks pretty nice! I have been looking for the Adrenalin version of those but no luck??

I am also thinking of the Jeep SRT-8 and was wondering if you would get another one? Seems like a pretty good deal on the one stop shop--performance and utility?

If you want the all around bad ass truck, go for the Jeep all day! I would get one again in a heartbeat if I could afford to keep it and the mustang. I def love the car, but the mustang was something I have wanted since they came out, so I jumped all over it.
