I've been looking into getting into snowboarding, to have something to do this winter other than sit inside and melt my eyes away.

Are there any local stores that sell snowboards that have a knowledgeable staff? Also, anyone local that does lessons, or would you recommend just getting lessons at Sunburst or wherever?

A ski/board club, but it's geared more towards younger people (<18). I was in Blizzard for years before it stopped.

Laacke & Joys is a reputable shop.

RIDE in New Berlin on National.

Have a TON of stuff. Great guys to talk to. My board should be ready to pick up hopefully. Had 'em just get it ready for the season.

Moda3 ( 3rd ward milwaukee ) was ranked the best shop in wisconsin by Transworld Snowboarding

but I will admit, Ride in New Berlin is really nice too. Karter is a pretty cool dude ( Owner )

I used to be an instructor for them. Sometimes getting some gently used stuff is better if its your first season; the investment in GOOD gear can get real pricey quick.

i've always researched, then talked to a friend at Lacke and Joys, then bought online. overhead at a store is too damn much.

I ended up picking up a Ride Control 158 cm board from Laacke and Joys. They were runinng a sale, Board, Bindings and Boots for $449. Pretty decent deal I think :headbang

How tall are you, and what kind of riding do you want to do? (curious just because of the board sizing)

I'm 5'10", I was aiming more for a 154-156 but this comes right up to the bottom of my mouth so it should work alright. I'm just looking to do some freeriding, not looking to get heavy into trick or anything.

No reason to go any larger than that in wisconsin.

If you're just starting out get something with some flex to it, much more forgiving/easier to learn on.

Yeah, mine's a bit big at 162, but i'm also 6'2" and I needed a bit wider board since my feet are a bit bigger.

I go out west so it's perfect for that. I want to get a 156-158 for the local hills. Maybe some sale might pop up.

a 162 is a nice riding board. I'm 6'2" 185lbs. I used to ride a 156 and that was nice also but I find that on the heavily groomed/ice slopes at Alpine Valley it was actually quite choppy to ride.

I've never tried to snowboard but I really want to actually. Last year I grabbed a sled made of foam and wanted to see if I could go down the hill (it's big and goes the entire length of my back yard) at my house standing on it. My first try I went all the way down to the bottom and didn't even come close to falling. I ended up going down like 10 times with out biffing once. I was able to turn and everything.

I'd like to actually try with a real snowboard on a real ski hill.

im running a 164w, worked fine on the smaller stuff around here but kicked ass west

yeah, out west i love the little bit longer board. I don't do the freestyle shit. Too old and getting hurt would be a bitch. I like the back bowls out west ALOT better than any jump, so it's nice and easy over the fresh stuff :)
