Cleans it up real nice. You do it to a bare block/heads etc before assembly.

Actually the best way is to Burn and blast.. Otherwise hot tank will only get grease off and some paint depending how charged the tank is??? You will never get block setiment out that way though... You get what ya pay for..

How hot does that get? Is that safe for aluminum blocks?

4-600 won't hurt it. Aluminum doesn't melt until you get above 1200 f

Every time I've had a block tanked it came back so clean you could eat off it and it rusted immediately.

Would you reccomend painting a block right away?

Also, what is the technique used on gun barrels where they make the metal oxidize, but in a controlled manner. Is it "blueing"?

Yeah, just wipe it down to get the residue off (my favorite is 3M brake cleaner), clean it one more time using reducer, thinner, or xylene (depending on the paint you're going to use), then paint it. Less paint is more. And flat black radiates heat best.

Bluing is just black oxide instead of red oxide. It's basically less crappy rust. Cold bluing is largely worthless.
