I'll get right to the point. Just bought a 42" Samsung Plasma 720p. While playing Xbox 360 (using a/v cords from first gen of console), it says it's displaying at 1280x720 @ 60 Hz but I know this TV is capable of 600Hz. Anyone know if I can adjust this? Xbox settings only let me choose between 720p and 1080i. Nothing with the Hz.

Also when I hit "info" when watching TV (regular cable but I get basic HD channels free, woot!) it will tell me 720p or 1080i, but again what about the Hz? Is this something that can be changed or not?

is it something to do with the fact that you are only using the a/v cords, and not a digital signal like the component or HDMI? i'm sure that's probably what's required

That crossed my mind at first. Can you get more than 60 Hz with standard cables? What are the advantages of an HDMI cord? My 360 doesn't have the HDMI outlet (first gen) which sucks but I think the standard cables @ 720p still look amazing.

Great TV, hard to beat a Samy Plasma!

My kid plugs his HDMI cables in and we watch Blue rays on his X-box , outstanding picture. I scrapped my component cables, makes everything look bland.

You have to have hdmi cables in order for your tv to display at the highest resolution. You can get around your xbox not having hdmi by having an hdmi upscaling receiver.

Component cables will work with a 720P display the 60 Hz deal might be all your display is capabable of. 120Hz Is usually found in 1080P displays ...HDMI is the only way to go for 1080P and use all the losless audio codecs DTS-MA and Dolby Tru HD audio...The Hz rate if you have it is something you can turn on/off in the TV menu...and its only 60 HZ or 120HZ .... the 240HZ rates are only on the new LED displays...Hope this helps

The 1280x720p @ 60hz is most likely what the 360 is sending to the TV.

As far as the 600hz, you really can't compare that number with the
60,120,240hz normally quoted on LCD's. Those numbers are actually full frames
vs. the 600hz sub fields generated by the plasma.

If it was an LCD, even though the source is sending it 60hz, it would generate
interpolated frames to create it's maximum refresh rate. With the plasma it's
somewhat the same, but it generates 10 sub fields for each frame and 60
frames per second. You are always getting that 600hz even though the source
is 60hz.

To me, it's all marketing. The plasma makers got to show a larger number even
though it's not the same thing. This is coming more an amateur, but I've done a
fair amount of research.

kinda what david said....the console can only generate 60hz....thats it....so thats what it is going to display
