My dad wen out to his truck this morning to find the tailgate GONE. :stare What the hell is that?

PLEASE be on the look out for it please. I doubt anyone will actually come across it but it's worth putting out there.

It's off of a Black 2008 (newest body style) Silverado. Not sure if it has the Holz sticker on it or not.

My dad is one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. He'd give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He's al a retired GM employee and is on a fixed income so this will be a costly repair for him if he goes through his insurance or not. Not an expensive you want popping up before the holidays.

I'll pay a $100 award to someone that can help us bust this SOB.

Please PM if you have any info. I promise to keep things anonymous.

Mel

Where and when did this happen? How can we differentiate this tail gate from the 20,000 othe black tailgates out there. Not being an ass, but that's pretty common.

I know it's a long shot. Like I said, I just figured I'd put it out there.

This happened on 33rd and Morgan area RIGHT in front of the house overnight last night. He noticed it this morning.

Could home owners insurance cover that?

Not hard to remove at all.. Drop it, release the straps and lift at the right angle.

Sucks to hear Mel, hope he can find a cheap resolution. Worst case, it'll still drive without a tailgate..

He rents. I doubt his rental insurance would cover it.

You're screwed. It's gone. It's on the back of some contractor's truck now.

I have a factory tailgate lock, slows them down a bit. The spring-loaded part (I've got EZ-lift) makes it a bit of a chore to get off anyway.

But anyway, tell him for the next one to get the locking latch. It's like $30.

My dad is just having the insurance company pay for it. He went to order it today...$2200! Better put a lock on these things guys if you haven't already.

Don't forget the spare tire lock also. Some Silverados/Tahoes/Sierras/Yukons got highly desirable 17" steel wheels under them. I'm not kidding either. The one on my truck is a POS 17" steel wheel with a craptacular Wrangler ST on it.

The hose clamp is a great idea but wouldn't it be rather easy to remove...???

Crappy idea. Only going to deter honest people. I carry a Leatherman in my pocket. Maybe a clamp like what's used to hold a CV boot on?

Honest people don't steal tailgates whether there's something to deter them or not.....:thumbsup

It certainly can't hurt. Thieves are less likely to stick around if they have to dick around with a deterrent like that.

But $2200 for a new one... you tell me who the real f'in crooks are?!?!?

Most guys want to snatch and run, they arent going to stop, pull out a screwdriver, loosen a hose clamp, and then pull it off. Chances are if its dark, they wont even see the clamp. Its like locking your car doors, it wont deter theft, but will slow it down if the party is determined to get what you have.

Don't forget to get #17802393 to replace the standard tailgate handle. A locking one is well worth the $40.
