What is a good laptop / laptop specs for regular usage and photoshop applications. I am in the market for a laptop and am curious what to look for and a good operating system for running photoshop and lightroom.

What are you guys all using? or suggest?

You will want to physically go out and look at the screens, make sure the quality of the screen on the laptop is good.

After that look for something that has oodles of power and ram.

Stay away from the cheap $399 pieces of shit. I speak from personal experience. I had an Acer that is now a paperweight.

Yeah, I don't want anything that will turn into a paperweight. I have looked at a couple HP's that seemed pretty nice.

there is a gateway at bestbuy with a core 2 duo, 4gb ddr3, 500 gb hd, 17.3 led screen and it has an extra bay for a second hd, so you could put another 500 gb notebook drive in it and have 1tb portable laptop space. The thing is only 599. I was going to get that one but I couldn't justify a 17" notebook screen. I got the next version down and its great.

Maybe its just me, but I wouldnt prefer a laptop for editing. I have Dell Vostros 220 CPU with dual HP monitors, I couldnt imagine doing it any other way. On one half of the screen I have Bridge running so I can quickly view all my pictures and edit my RAW's. On the other half is PS.

When I am running lightroom, which I have been moreso lately, I use one monitor for editing while the other has the image on the full screen showing the updates in real time.

Again, your choice, but I just dont see a laptop being as good.

I agree, I would much rather do all my editing at home, but timing is sometimes an issue. Also, I have been shooting photos for my daughter's school during basketball season and a lot of the other parents are interested in buying photos, so with a laptop I can get the photos up on a screen quicker for them to look at.
Plus, my daughter needs the desktop for doing homework and other surfing, so this way I can do work on the laptop while still watching football on sundays.

Watch craigslist for a 17" or 15" Macbook Pro. Seriously, I cannot over talk-up their displays for photo editing.

I have heard this quite a bit that Mac is the best way to go for photo editing.

MacBook Pro all the way. I was strictly a PC guy for years ( thats all I work on at work ) but I cant get over these macs. so much easier, faster, ...but....pricey

I have the March 2009 Model, 15inch 2.66ghz, 4gig ( upgraded to 8 ) 320gb 5200RPM HDD ( upgraded to 500gb 7200RPM ) and the LED screens are nuts like Scott said....much faster with the upgrades too

get a 15 inch if you KNOW your going to get a monitor or get the 17inch if you dont know if your getting a monitor ( I have the 24 inch apple cinema and I love it!!! )
