Is there a way to save something from your DVR onto your pc?

My dvr box has 2 usb ports and I thought you might be able to transfer but how?

I know if you use an E sata cable and portable drive on Direct it becomes the DVR after booting it with the drive plugged in. Not sure if Uverse works the same. There are hacks for the Uverse boxes.
