Mark Smith, one of the owners of Factory five is prototyping a new kit based on a vw tdi donor. The chassis bits are coming along and he's posting every day on ffcobra.com with build updates. The coolest thing about the project is lots of people on the site are sharing ideas and getting involved with the process. The thread is long so here are the cliff notes.

- the car will employ the donor philosophy (99-05 golf/jetta)
- the primary engine will be a 2.0 TDI engine (turbo'd vr6 will fit)
- the car will be a sporty daily driver/commuter car
- more typical production car ride height, visibility, headroom
- the car will have sports car looks & good handling
- the car will be weather tight & have roll up windows
- the car will have reasonable trunk space and/or space behind the seats
- the car will have multiple engine options
- the car will be inexpensive (10k kit +donor vw)
- will retain vw dash and front seats

Things to be explored
- a targa or removeable roof section
- rear jump seats

great idea...but you gotta love the forum approach. I surprised that it's not this:

-needs to get 200mpg
-weigh only 1,100 lbs
- 0-60 under 4 seconds
- seat 10 comfortably
- all-wheel drive
- be able to assemble in 5 minutes with little more than an allen wrench and some zip tie
- cost less than 79.98 + donor car.

But I digress...if they built something similar to above, with compromised headroom/ride height/etc and it was only 10K+ donor car, it'd be a great car to consider....but then, it'd only be a summer car. I'd want something a little more practical, like a miata type kit car, with normal ride heights, convertible, light, etc....and something you could get winter tires on.

fixed for true internet forum approach.

I have actually been SERIOUSLY considering selling everything I have now and starting on a GTM build. FFR makes some pretty good kits, especially given the price.

That would be kind of interesting... that's for sure. What was the target weight? And a 10k kit + a VW donor car + paint... you might actually be able to finish that thing for under $20k!

No one has put down a number, but I can only assume it will be a lot lighter than a stock jetta (500 pounds plus) As it will be more of a commuter than a race car, I'm more interested in fit and finish than total weight. A three season car that can be driven in a hard rain without soaking the occupants is the most important thing for me.
