I'm working on an 05 300C RWD. It has a roational noise that becomes loud and clear at about 25mph and above. It's a loud thumping noise coming from the right front. I've been told that it sounds alot like a broken belt in a tire/ really cupped tire. So, to rule that out, I've rotated the tires. Well, the noise still has not gone away, it's still in the right front. I've had others tell me that the wheel bearing may be bad, but I've only heard a howling noise from wheel bearings when they go bad. I have a new wheel bearing in the box but I want to make sure that that's the problem before I put it in. We've also already checked the caliper mounting which seems ok, the tie rod has a little play in it, but not bad enough I don't think to make a noise like that. The brakes even though are original, are still in great shape and the rotors are not warped.

Any ideas? I've been racking my brain about this for the last day and can't seem to come up with anything. BTW the car has 65k on it.

Thanks all!
Brian

I've heard the bearings go out and it be a loud thumping before....

try this. Drive it so that the sound is being emitted, then turn to the right at speed. Does it go away? Likely the bearing then. Right front is also the most common bearing to fail.

mine was a loud grinding noise after the thumping went away and it was the hub bearing. easy check to see.

Did you try having someone drive it while on the rack up in the air,and listen to that side with a stethescope ?

Prince, you were right! I replaced the wheel bearing and the noise went away. It's odd though, I've never heard a bad wheel bearing make anything other that just a howling noise. Thanks for the suggestions, and now I know!

an easy way to tell if it's a bearing- jack up the car, grab the tire in question at 12 & 6 position and see if there's "slop" or "play". If it wiggles back and forth, bad bearing.

Was it a pain in the ass to fix?

actually it was pretty easy. on and off in less than an hour.
