:goof you lose your ass buying a car, period.

I wish I would of put the 16k down on a house instead of the GTX.... at least the house would of appreciated, not depreciated like a car.

I have to admit.. I drove the same 87' F-150 from when I was 16 till I was 22 and I was so fricken tired of dealin with that rust bucket. If your going to get a ring for your girl I am going to assume you'll want a house to go with it. (well she will lol)
The house is a very nice thing to have when you have a nice car...

Insurance is just fricken ridiculous for 16-25 year old guys, esp if your driving anything with some balls.

It's a money pit you have to decide for yourself. :sucks cuz now I hate myself :goof

Buy a mustang first, then the "newer" car. That way, you will have both cars sooner.

You don't *need* a new car IMO, just rely on an older already paid for and cheaper car to get you around. You can get very reliable cars for dirt cheap. Money towards a house is much more important and if you feel you have a little extra to play with, get a fox body Mustang....you'll be much faster for much cheaper than a new car anyways :D.

Personally I would wait until I was settled wiht a job and direction before proposing or thinking about getting a ring. If you love each other, it shouldnt matter!

I would almost NEVER buy a new car again. Not worth it! All those sales pitches are just that! Pitches to get you roped into paying almost double what the car is worth. I would buy a used car in CASH. Now you arent losing money on interest or insurance and you can always sell it and walk away when your tastes change. You always think you can last the 4 or 5 year finance but that hardly lasts expecially with people that suffer from our disease.

Save to buy a house first and buy all the cars you want with the house as your overhead so you can write off the interest and get better loan rates.

In the end, its your decision! Good luck! :shades

Never buy a new car unless you've got wads of cash falling out of your pocket so fast you're losing $ that way. (I had to this last time, or else it wouldn't have been built).

In the same sentence, you said "buy my girl a ring" and "trying to invest". These are entirely opposite goals. If the ring has something to do with "diamond", then forget about any delusions of spending your money wisely. Better to wait til your girl wises up a bit. Plus, you should be in no hurry. You're too young to get married. And if she "can't wait" a little while, then she doesn't really love you - and you're too young to get divorced.

Best advice is to always own at least 2 vehicles (for the rest of your life, that is). Buying one with a loan will get you better rates if you've still got cash in your accounts, so then buy the fun car after. Why buy a newer car? If you can keep the curent one running, stay with it. If you're not inclined or can't afford the time commitment, get a newer, reliable one - just not a new one.

Side story. Few years ago at work, discussing cars/trucks, one girl interjects: "I don't know why all of you have more than one car, all you need is one car" (well, at least she had a Camaro). Coworker says "NO, you only NEED one pair of SHOES, but you need at least 2 vehicles". That shut her up fast.

Buy the fox body and mod it ASAP! AL Qaeda could attack at any minute and we could all be dead! Go lease a Honda Civic for $150/month, beat the piss out of it for 3 yrs and you still have your fox body and a git me to point A and B car that is reliable with low operating costs. As for the ring...... the key is to see how long they will go before they start nagging. Then tell them maybe in a year or two and see if they stick around. If not, you haven't lost out.

I would never lease a car, JMO.

why wouldn't you lease? Please explain. Leasing provides you a warranty-covered vehicle for a dirt cheap payment. Like Joe said, lease a Civic or a Corolla for **** $120/month and you will still have money to buy a fun car. That way you can save the mileage on your fun car and also not have to worry about it always being put back together in time for work the next day. To shut out the idea of leasing is foolish if you ask me. I think it is a smart way to go to know that you will always be covered under warranty in case something breaks (which stuff always does).

I'm not saying lease a Corvette...I'm saying lease something reliable for less than $150/month. This is smart to me. Honda has deals for no money down and everything. You can walk in, say "I want that one" and sign the papers. If you have the money for tax, license and whatever else, you are out the door. It seems smart to me, not ignorant.

I agree J. What can you buy and make payments on for a buck and a half per month?? Something old that is going to need repairs. Then after three years you go get a brand new car. Now I would never lease a car for a lot more per month.

Well, there are a couple of things you need to watch out for in a lease. 1. Mileage, most leases allow you 10K-12K per year. If you go over that you will get charged BY THE MILE a penalty that could add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars. 2. A lease is IMPOSSIBLE to get out of early, and alot of things can happen in life and with a job in 2 or 3 years. So you need to make sure you can afford to make the payments for the whole term of the lease. 3. Remember that after the end of the lease you WILL HAVE NOTHING, no car, no equity, no nothing. You are just paying for the use of someone else's car and at the end of that time, you walk away. If you consider those major things and don't have problems with ALL of them, then go lease a car. If you object to any of them, I would pass on it. JMHO

exactly. But it has its benefits. For instance...a girl (95% of them anyways). She will most likely not mod the car. She won't take the greatest care of it. And she will be bored with it after like 2 years. Leasing is an excellent option. No if you commute a good ways to work, this is not a good idea. You will put a LOT of miles on the car and have to pay out the @ss for the overage. I think leasing is an excellent way for someone to get into a new car versus a used car, have a warranty and get a reliable means of transportation. Buying used is a gamble. You shack the dice everytime you buy used. There are 2 year old cars out there than could KILL you with maintenance bills. You have to remember, 98% of all people that own cars today are not enthusiasts. They have a car to drive it. Thats it. They NEED a car. How many BMWs have you seen that the front wheels have so much brake dust it looks like they have never been washed? Most of the BMWs I see look like this. $60,000 car thats treated like a $800 Escort. Its the way of the world now.

Leasing can provide someone the opportunity to have a nice car without a big payment. Lord know I would like to have a car for $150/ month or less. A Kia Rio doesn't seem to bad now does it?

I take better care of my car then any guy I know! And from what I have noticed, guys get sick of their cars alot more then girls do.

thats why I put the CYA statement in there of 95% of all girls. I am stereotyping yes but it is probably an accurate number.....cuz I would say about 9 out of 10 girls could careless about cars.

my comment wasn't meant to offend, which is why I was careful to say not all but most. Don't read into it too much :thumbsup

Most girls arn't interested in cars becuase nobody has taught them anything about them or given them the opportunity to grow an interest.

I dont take it personaly, just too many people generalize and its bullshit.

The reasons listed above are basically the reasons not to get into a lease. You own nothing when it is done. Of course you can buy it for its value after. Its like renting a car, or paying rent instead of building towards owning something(example renting vs. paying towards a house). Doesn't make much sense financially. If you want cheap just get an older car that is paid for. At least you can sell that for most if not all of what you paid when done ;). From what I understand some leases are good if a it is a write off depending on your job/company.
