Cal-trac FTW

well, that does not really answer the question, but i will pass that info along.

well, that does not really answer the question, but i will pass that info along.

never heard of a "lift bar"
but a slapper bar USED to be the answer to getting a leaf spring car down the track without wheel hop.
since technology,we have the cal-trac and the slide-a-link
these types of traction devices work MUCH differently than the old slapper bar.

will a slapper bar work, yes. will it ever perform like the other two i mentioned,NO WAY

i will pass that info along as well. he did not tell me much. said he was looking at Jegs and came across a "lift bar" when searching for a traction bar. maybe they are the same thing?!??! beats me. thanks.

I have to agree with Ron if you can go for the Cal-tracs.

Caltracs are wasy easier to adjust, and they are the next best thing to a 4 link.

The only thing I can think of that your friend is talking about is "ladder bars"

http://performanceparts.com/part.php?partID=1414

vs.

Traction bars

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BWCDDY

Ladder bars are more effective at arresting axle wrap of the two....but still aren't as good as cal-tracs. Traction bars (slappers), set-up right, are effective at the job of reducing wheel hop too. I've seen plenty do exactly what ron has said though...slap, and actually unload the spring, causing a loss of traction. One particularly poor set up (the snubber was a good 5 inches from the leaf spring) actually slapped so hard, it caused the spring break on a manual trans equipped car.

But neither are more effective nor as adjustable as the cal-trac system though. The cal-trac is a little more expensive to purchase, just as hard to install, but FAR more tuneable than the "ladder bars"

Those and all the South Side Machine rip offs should only be used if you want to repair your torn torque boxes some day

Build your own Cal-tracs. It's easy. I built a set before I even knew what Cal-tracs were.

The second easiest thing to do to reduce wheelhop is to put a steering damper on a long arm (say welded to the differential cover) and mount the other end to the chassis somewhere.

I used Slidealinks on my sdime. Dame nice quality and I think at the time they were cheaper than caltracs.

Lots of band aids out there for the correct way to hook up:
Four Link, wheelies are for showing off, 4-link for pro mod launch.

That would be double-triangulated fourlink, not the developmentally disabled buckets of roll oversteer and antisquat fourlink found on many wannabeheimmeister's failcoupes.

double-triangulated fourlink

Thats great for Jeeps and rock crawlers, conventional four link to distribute equal power on hard acceleration attempts like NHRA top fuelers.

Triangulated for a weekend racer would be a good compamise between launch and difficulty locating upper bars (floor pan concerns).

4 link:Lift bars under load bring the IC of the trailing arms (4 link, like my old chevelle Eric) more to the center of the car making it have foward bite. These are used on 4 link cars which he shouldnt have.

Leaf spring: A cheap slapper (traction bar) goes on the axle and has a pinion snubber on the end to go against the leaf spring. This prevents axle wrap which the pinion wants to climb the ring gear under acceleration. On good traction bars you can adjust it.

Axle wrap makes the suspension unload (when you get on it it hooks for a lil then blows the tires off). You can adjust pinion angle also with shims on a leaf car also Usually for a street strip leaf car you want around 4 degrees. Cheap slapper bars (lakewoods) went 9's already.

On my old chevelle when I had a set of SSM LIFT bars. The lower control arm mounted lower and had a shackle which moved on acceleration. Usually you want your lower control arms on a 4 link car to be as level as possible for better bite.

CAL TRACS ARE EXPENSIVE BUT THE BITCH WILL HOOK. The 30 dollar cheapies work also. Personally I think that guy would be better with the cheapies as hes not too hardcore about it.
