So I am thinking about tapping off existing duct and running it to the garage. Garage ie attached and I would need to drill a 4 inch hole in the floor joist that runs about 36 " under a closet. I would need to put a flapper in to prevent back flow...... Could use some input on this.

I wouldn't do this Dan, it won't heat your garage one bit zip ziltch zero :stare

4" pipe can't flow more then I think is 60 CFM

Even if you were to run 6" or 8" it still wouldn't heat the garage, yea it might feel warm in the path of the air but it won't raise the Temp.

Air flow works by supplying a room and bring the air back, also called a Return. Of course you do not want a Return in your Garage because of safety issues.

Personally I would just stick a furnace in there :thumbsup

I can get a furnace practically freethis is something I can do. I can stop by and take a look and see what I can come up with.

Just one of those Remington propane units from Menards. I could order a natural gas orifice and pipe it but with out insulation it would run forever. Im not looking to run it all winter but if I want to defrost a car in a hurry Ill have to pony up for a big one.

Well you still don't have to have it keep running if you do want to pipe it. Just put it on a thermostat and then shut er down when you leave or whatever. (depending on what you decide to get)
