View Full Version : Lets talk car audio....
So I'm thinking of getting a little system for my DD...its been a few years since i purchased or even thought of purchasing any car audio stuff...so what new and good..what do i want to avoid? The last "aftermarket" stereo stuff i bought was an alpine head unit and 2 boston accoustic 10"s...
need a recommendation for someone to install it for me when that time comes...thanks
not looking for a competition system just a descent sounding sytem that will sound good with my VERY wide range of music i like....

for my DD i bought a set of older kenwoods off a guy at work the price was right and they do just enough for me i can rattle my mirror when i want and can turn it down when i don't need it. for decks if you got a little extra to spend alpine and kenwood seem to be the best in my opinion. For subs tho i miss my old 12" rockford punch3 it hit very hard but was expensive. they don't make them any more that ive seen

Well - it all depends on what you're going for. I kind have the same thing in my DD since I drive so much for work and just let my ipod scroll through the 30k songs.
Since I'm forced to be an adult, sometimes, I went with 1 12" sub - since I'm saving the space of having 2 subs, I might as well get the most bang for the buck out of 1. I have 1 5 channel amp that is bi-amping my front components and powering the sub, and the rears (rather useless) are just powered off the pioneer HU.
If I were to throw another audio system into the Acura - I'd buy it all used. Save a TON of money and I really don't care if everything looks perfect. I couldn't even tell you the last time that I looked at the amplifier in my trunk. As long as it works, get decent used stuff (JL, Memphis, Boston) and throw it together.
What kind of car is it for? I like sealed boxes (mostly for heavy metal where I like the distinction in any double bass drum stuff), and there are custom sealed boxes made for almost any common car.
The big question is....
how much are you looking to spend?

I have a really nice dual 12" mtx road thunder pro box, JL Audio 500/1v2 amp and a 1 farad cap for sale. The amp alone was almost $600 and is almost brand new. Puresound will attest this is an excellent amp. I also have a 4 guage wire kit with fuse block for under the hood. Will sell everything for $350. Well over $1000 worth of stuff. The mtx box was custom built by American, has metal grills and is set up to be a full range box, has woofers, mids, and tweeters. Ported.

I guess it all depends what you want in a system. Do you want the best sound acoustically you can get? Hard to do in a car. I think people over power their audio stuff to compensate for bad acoustics, or they feel the need to share their musical tastes with the whole world:headbang
Glass, metal, odd shaped area, combined with foam padding and cloth really plays hell with the sound quality.

this is the rockford Fosgate punch 12" sub that I won from the bcm car show last year.....Project 2 did a great job on the install. The amp is a alpine V12 500 watt amp that I got from NismoDave used.....
Speakers in the car are factory stock 6 speaker setup.....mach 460......sounds great, might upgrade the speakers in it to a component setup from alpine (the type r) and a three way setup in the rear (type r).....

back when i had my other saturn.(2door) i Opted for the one 12" due to space. it was a rockford P3 with a rockford am i think total i paid $1200 with the box just for one witch install kit. I did the install myself. i still have the system in the girlfriends car but i missed having bass so i had to get something else. I would definately buy used over new as long as it works good. You could always hit up seven mile fair :thumbsup

I've always been a fan of Alpine stuff, decks, type r subs, components. Mtx make decent amps for the price.
Like others said, may want to specify what type of music you listen to. Rap/pop you probably want 1-2 12's, if you listen to mostly rock 1-2 10's would be fine.
Don't get caught up in the peak power numbers. Feed all of your speakers the max RMS watts and they will sound the best.
