One hell of a great day.

The wife and I decided to take a little road trip down to Il yesterday.

We started out at Ann Sathers specifically for the cinnamon rolls they have. They were featured on Food Networks show The Best Thing I Ever Ate. DAMN they were good. We had a ham and cheese omelet as well. Everything was just delicious. It's a real small old restaurant. Totally worth the drive by itself.

Next we were just going to kill some time at Old Orchard mall, do some shopping.

The plan was to eat at Portillo's for a late lunch early dinner but we were so damn full from breakfast we knew we needed to kill more time then shopping could.

So then we decided to see inglourious basterds at the theater in the mall. We both left the movie completely satisfied and giggling like little school girls. God I love that movie.

By the time the movie let out it was almost 3 and I was getting hungry.

Portillo's Italian Beef with hot peppers did not disappoint. Every bit is better then the last.

We called it a day, drove home, AND didn't even run into a lot of traffic.

It was just such an enjoyable day from beginning to the end. I almost forgot what it feels like to have the time to just be able to go and enjoy a day out and about.

I highly recommend if you like food, to check these places out if you haven't been.

Ummmmmmm....Portillo's!

One of the few things I miss about not living in the Chicago area anymore.
I usually will stop at one whenever I am down there.

Holy Flashbacks. I graduated from Niles North HS across the street from Old Orchard. Everyone used to have to walk across the street to the parking lot to smoke.

We used to go to the location on Clark St in Chicago. I think all the locations are north side of Chicago

Portillos holds a good standard. Not the best, but always a good place to go.

I like Johnny's Beef better. Old one down in the city, there is a newer on Arlington heights road between Golf and 90.

Just east of 53 on Algonquin road in the same general area is Russel's.... They have a bbq sandwich to die for, the sweet bbq sauce is what makes it great.

Both places have been in business since forever.

And if you are in a Gyro mood and around St Charles/South Elgin - Skippy's Gyros are the best I ever had. Not greasy or dry ... juicy & fresh.

And if you just want some authentic taco's, not a fancy resturant ..... Algonquin Road out towards Randall in Lake in the Hills. Tacos el Norte. Try the Chirizo Gordita con papas and pour on the green sauce.

Of course they don't have substitutes for Kopps or George Webbs down there.

Yea - thats the original one. I've never been there - just the one out on Arlington Heights Rd.

If you ask for ketchup to go, they wrap up a few wrappers into a pouch and pour some ketchup into it.

At least the have ketchup unlike Gene and Judes.
