Back From NMRA & Hendricks Motorsports

Well, Im back and the trip was awesome!!! I filled a ton of stuff into just 5 days. The purpose of the trip was to visit with friends and family while attending a car show at zmax as you know but a bonus was tossed in. A buddy I went to school with is the IT/Physical Security supervisor at Hendricks Motorsports in Concord, NC. He offered to take me around on a tour so I grabbed my nieces and off we went.

I wasnt allowed to take pictures anywhere except in the museum becuase of proprietary stuff but it was awesome!! We toured the chassis shop, engine shop, body shop, security room, a couple of mock up haulers and as a bonus 2 of Rick Hendricks personal garages. Why do I say 2 of them? Because there are a total of 5 and as we were there ground was being broken on a brand new building being built there to house his entire collection under one roof. There were also getting ready to launch their customer line. They are opening up a garage where they will be building custom cars for those who "have the money" to spend on custom one off rides. Everything in these cars is made in shop from the frame, suspension, engine blocks, pistons, all of it is made in house. To see a CNC machine with 10 solid block locked in it on all 4 sides and then watch the machine start to cut out their own pistons is just unreal!! I never really though so much body work goes into the cars but they really do want them to shine like a gem. Its a trip to see work. Every piece that goes through has just a engine number to keep the identity of the driver unknown. So that whoever works on the piece cant give a driver an advantage. They just work on a piece and dont know who it goes to in order to keep everything level. We toured all shops. JJ & Gordon are in one building and then Junior & Mark Martin are together.

Hendrick has a couple of hot ass cars in his garage. 2010 camaro SS production #1 verified by the VIN....was cool. Didnt know if he liked a blue or black ZR1 so he bought each color. They both had lots of miles on them too so hes driving them. Had a beautiful 1100 horse twin turbo impala SS. A ton and I mean TON of custom vettes and production camaros but the one car he drives the most is some model of Ferrari all of that american muscle and he likes his ferrari as a daily driver.

The drive was 15 hours and it was HOT HOT HOT the day of the show. 98 degrees with stupid high humidity. Racing was freakin awesome!! The show was a little on the weak side but it was fun. I took home a trophy for "Best Daily Driver" a guy from virginia won "Longest Haul" award. Not sure how thats farther than I drove but whatever.....Was a cool event and saw some cars I havent seen before. Reaction to my car was pretty cool also

I wish I had taken more pics of the track itself but it was soooo damn hot I couldnt even think of anything except finding shade.

P.S. its a sad story but a fan did pass away at the track. He was in the Hemi booth looking at a motor getting ready to fire and down he went without warning. Dont know what happened to him but the medics were all over it. Stupid fans wouldnt give em space to work on him. Just kept crowding them. Was a freakin joke!

All of these cars here are dirty as hell from racing. Its incredible they take a $500K car after a win and put it in the museum for a year or longer. Well thats exactly what they did. JJ's championship car, Gordons indy 500 car....all here just as they were when they rolled out of victory lane.

Ever wonder how they get the tire on right each and everytime??? Well the hub is machined into a cone like shown here and the studs are recessed so when the rim goes on the lug is glued to the wheel and when hit with impace wrenc they go through the wheel and grab the studs. ONly about 3 threads are actually turned in. We watched about an hour of pit stop practice at hendricks shop that day. Those guys are freakin HUGE!!!

The Carolina's are some of the most beautiful states on the east coast. From the mountains on the west to the beaches on the east and the red soil in between. I have wanted to move out that way for years. The only thing holding us back is that the wages for the medical field is way better in the mid west then out east.

It was very clear I was in the south from the start. People would say high out in the mall walking around. Seemed to be very helpful when I had car issues. Locals were calling me telling me about events and such. The employees as the hendricks shop were really excited about the car. Most of them seemed to be hot rod or truck guys but they were all really awesome!!

The track is awesome to see. I heard racer after racer bitching about the surface though. Evidently track management is having some issues keeping it consistent. They also had some issues managing the classes and traffic the previous day for the busy saturday events. People were also ticked off that the grandstand "closest" to the parking lot and the show were closed. That made one hell of a walk to get to see the racing versus where the show was.

I did enjoy myself though BUT......wouldnt do that much in only 5 days again LOL

The only thing that got me was they pushed it around. They then got the trailer right up to the car and pulled it on with a winch. Just not sure whats going on there???? Would have loved to hear it fire up and see those belts turn. Not sure why its triple charged AND nitrous injected but hey.....whatever floats your boat. I would rock that red monte carlo in a flat second. That thing is gorgeous
