Does it have to be perfect?

Dell Inspiron 8200 - $120
Runs fine on AC power.
+ 1.6 GHz
+ 256mb ram
+ *SERIAL PORT* in case you want to tune with it too :]
+ 30GB Hard-Drive
+ CD-RW drive
+ AC Adapter

- Screen has a thin red line running down the left side, I've been using this laptop for a few months, and it doesn't bother me at all.
- Battery present, but does not charge, probably dead.

You could easily pick up another 512mb stick of ram for like $10 shipped off eBay, I just never got around to it.

But seriously, had a lappy very similar to this myself. Should do just fine for what your buddy needs..

:goof that is why it's only $120.
With no line, I could get ~$190 on ebay easily.

Some people are picky though, and that's understandable.
It kind of blends in with grey/white backrounds though, it only stands out against really dark backgrounds.
