Turn the self adjuster back until the drum slides in place. Then adjust to a slight drag. Make sure everything is in its proper place. If the adjuster or shoes are not in the right place you will have issues

the shoes might look the same but one is smaller than the other usually. So make sure they are in the right spot

the adj. is all the way back, there is no nut on this one, but i bottom'd it out and still cant get it over... I cant get it on either side so that eliminates the pads being to big or small like above said... cause then i would have one with both small and it would fit...

Is there a rust ring on the inside of the drum that is catching the shoes? That has held me up more than once. Try filing or grinding off that ring and try again. Or, if you replaced the shoes, are they for sure the correct ones? Remember, the shoe with the longest section of friction material goes towards the front.

If all else fails either shave the shoes down or cut the drums, which is something that should be done anyways......:shades

Some drum brakes setups don't allow you to adjust them when the drum is on, not many but they are out there......

what year and what type of car exactly is this also

If it’s a Mazda Protegay it shouldn’t have a threaded wheel type adjuster. It will have two flat steel pieces right below the wheel cylinder with teeth on the touching ends that ‘set’ against each other. It's hard to explain exactly how it works but in person it should be easy to figure out......:)

You would have to compress the cylinder a bit - squeeze together the two parts labelled "F" in the diagram...

funny story, So jeff comes over to help... I did the same thing on my own before he came over but did not hit the adjuster with a screwdriver enough... Then he came over and for whatever reason i hit it til it bottomed out.... and we almost broke my garage door LOL What a freaking day!!!!!

thanks jeff for coming over man :)

You don't need to hit it with a hammer, taking a flat screwdriver and wedging it between the two pieces allowing them to slide past each other (giving you the least adjustment) works just fine......:thumbsup
