I live a few blocks away, there has to be at least 8 - 10 engines there and 3 on the crane/long ladder dousing the building.

Place used to be a old steak house, past year it was re-done real nice and seemed to have one hell of a business. I had a few fish fries there and a breakfast, all were really good.

Its one hell of a fire tho......................

I was up there,it was going pretty good. I saw fire trucks from Hales Corners, Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Cudahy, Franklin, Milwaukee, St. Francis, West Allis, Greendale, and North Shore fire department.

We(Milwaukee) sent the Fire Bell club Canteen unit and one Paramedic unit. I have been trying to locate a copy of the MABAS Box Card for Cudahy online. They had a Ladder truck from Brookfield covering other calls in the city of Cudahy during this fire.

I have heard on the news all the time about what a "Alarm" mean but everytime I ask someone I get a different answer so what better way to have someone who works in the field answer this question. What is a 2 alarm, 3 alarm, 4 alarm mean? How high will the numbers go?

On my way back from the casino, had to drop my brother off who lives in the area, and at 2:30 the road was still closed.

I would imagine it's pretty much gone, hope none of the surrounding buildings got it.

Damn, that place was Selens House of Prime Rib forever then it became Layton Gardens not long ago. We just had Mother's Day brunch there a few weeks ago too. That sucks.

Sure, I will do my best to explain everything. The reason you get so many different answers is because every single department does it a little different. The basic standard is 5 alarms is the highest. Although there may be some departments that go higher in certain situations.

In the City of Milwaukee If a fire is called in we send a 'Full assignment' which is our 1st alarm, we send 10 units. On the request for 2nd alarm we send another 10 units. On the 3rd alarm we send 9 more units. And on the 4th and 5th alarms we send 3 engines each. So when everything is there we have 35+ units on a fire scene and approx 125 firefighters on the scene. The biggest fire We have had since I started working up there was the Falk incident, and there was actually more equipment there due to special calls for hazmat team etc.

Now for the suburbs like the Cudahy fire last night, this is where it gets a little confusing. They use MABAS which is the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. Here is an example of one of their runcards. Unsure if its current or not. This is actually a city of South Milwaukee Runcard not Cudahy although it doesn't change too much.

http://www.southmilwaukeefd.org/MABAS/SMFD%20STRUCTURE%20FIRE%20CARD.pdf

As you can see in the link above on each alarm level the cities listed send the unit that is requested as long as it is available. If one unit is not they have to pull a unit from the next alarm level. So it can get confusing pretty quickly. Thats pretty much the basics of it all. If someone has a question let me know.

Actually you explained it pretty well, IMO. I think I get it, which means I am probably way off.

I'm always impressed at how many firefighters show up at fires. That's one devoted group of people.

No injuries were reported, but the structure appeared to be gutted.

The place was emptied? Furniture, etc?
