After seeing 100s of them at Automation I'm seriously considering a 2000-2004 GT. But I don't know jack about Stangs.

Any common issues or things to look out for on them? How are they in winter? I'd buy a set of snows of course.

I wouldn't mod much besides a CIA and exhaust so that doesn't worry me much.

Well I love my car. If you have one with low mileage and the stock tires dump them, they go for shit in the snow. I drove my car twice in snow because my beater trucks doors were frozen. Other than that, I have had no problems with mine in the year and 3 months I have had mine, except for the center council powerpoint not working. I have put on 20,000 miles on it since I got it.

My DD is a 04 GT. Love it. 0 problems, and it actually does really well with a set of blizzaks. I was going through snow that was over the door sills. I got out of the parking lot without getting stuck once whereas all the camrys and neons were still there the next day sitting in snow cause they were stuck.

My vote is for a 32V (Mach1/Cobra) That's what I was looking at when I was car shopping.

You should look at an 05/06 GTO, they make for an excellent DD.

32v. Thats great but for me at the time it would've been about 200 more a month 100 for the cost of the car and another hundy to insure the mach over the gt. Easily made up my mind there :) Insurance rates on GT's are pretty reasonable I thought when compared to mach/cobra.

Yeah I don't care that much about how fast it's going to be. Plus I'm trying to find something cheap. Seems like you can find plenty of GT's with reasonable miles around $10K and under. And for whatever reason convertible GT's seem to be cheaper then hardtops.

I need a new car to replace my Monte and just having a real hard time finding anything I like. Seeing all the Stangs this weekend made me consider one. But my biggest concern was winter.

My gt somehow has no ABS and no traction control and I never had one problem in snow with blizzaks all the way around. Those tires WORK. Sure you gotta take it easy and don't punch it in the snow if you want the ass end to stay behind you, but it's really no big deal. They go real nice in snow with the right tires... and if anything they're fun when you want them to be in an empty parking lot :devil

note: never once have i wished i had a more practical car in winter. Mileages is about 22-23 mixed driving... never less than 19 even in pure city spirited driving.

well if you are looking for a good one with lower mileage then look for the 99-02's....maybe an 03....the 04's are still going for 12-15k

I have but they are $15K and up. I really don't want to spend that much.

Ah bummer. I was looking at a Silver 04 here with 30k deal was asking 14k so I'm sure they'd take 12k.

With the economy the way it is and it being so slow at my job, I'm trying to keep a payment as low as possible for the time being. So I'm trying to stay cheap right now, yet still get something somewhat fun.

14k? was that sticker price or internet price?

I looked at GT's before getting a jeep cherokee (the price was too good to pass up). The only issue I found was that most the really affordable ones felt like they lived a harder life than the more costly ones.

But to me, they seemed like reasonably fast enough cars, fun to drive, and if you don't go out swapping gears and what not, reasonably economical with gas. I would think the hardest thing is not letting the mod (and by mod, I mean modding) bug bite and making a reasonable car into something less reliable and economical at the expense of fun. Sure is a better coupe, and more fun to drive than a v6 monte, lol.

It was listed at 14K online no idea what the sticker was. Mine was listed for 19k online and worked down to 16k.

Therein lies the problem. I managed to keep mine to just a shifter and a catback so far. :goof

I wouldnt count on getting them to come down to 12 on that one, possibly 13, but not 12, just considering how the economy is these days

Werd. Sometimes if i'm nice and not WOT on all the onramps I get 23-24. Trips I've seen 25.

Someday if I keep this car that long maybe I'll do a t56 conversion. That'd really get some mileage out of 'er i think.

Double OD ftw!! I pull around 28 with mine, grant I stay out of the pedal. At least that's what the dash says :goof

Why are the verts so damn cheap on these years? There's a bunch of them for sale usually cheaper then the coupes.

And I would be willing to bet if I was looking for a 5 spd, they'd be hard to find, but since I want a automatic all the ones I see at a good price at stick.

I bought my 03 GT last fall. Didn't drive it in Winter. Has given me zero mechanical problems, it needed a new battery but that's it. I keep waiting for something bad to happen, and nothing does. I started out with 18-19 mpg, but lately I've been babying it more and have got up to 23 mpg.

really higher mileage or what? I cant see why a vert would be less than a hardtop.

No, comparable miles. It's weird.

I think living in WI is the reason for the lower value of a vert here, in SoCal verts will bring more than a coupe and for good reason look at SoCal's weather and compare it to ours.
Besides who wants the unsecurity of a soft top ?

50k Miles on my 03, alternator died and battery got changed out as well, probably could use a new clutch. :rolf
My T56 final OD is about the same as a 5 speed's od and about the ratio as 5th gear in a F Bod Trans. F-Bod 6th gear is .5 or .51 and the production Stang's T56 6th gear ratio was like .64, about 22mpg on the highway here and not really trying for MPG. :thumbsup

Good cars.

I had a vert once when I was younger, and that sucked for a winter car. Your head never gets warm.

I cant ever remember being in a convertible and I always wondered if they had a headliner or if all the metal frame was exposed ? Spose it depends on the ride.

Its because new edge convertibles are ugly as fuck and nobody wants one unless you're a ****** or a girl.

If you're going to buy a used Mustang and want to drive it year round, you have the right idea. I've seen a few 2005 Mustangs for under $10K (V6 coupes with 70K miles) but they are NOT built for winter! I think an '04 (new edge) would be a much better winter car due to the build quality.

I'll keep an eye out for something clean and fun. I seem to run across tons of great cars when I'm not in the market and it dries up when I'm ready to play.

Actually I think my wife's 06 V6 coupe is better in the snow than my 04 gt is. Never had a problem with hers in deep snow either. :confused

My comment was more about how the body panels are tack welded and glued together on the new cars. I can't say a Mustang is any good in the snow as I have 2 Subarus right now. I think the '04 was built with less salt pockets and areas where corrosion can begin than the '05 and newer vehicles.

no idea on what breaks but i drove a 2000 GT 5 speed to Byron Dragway like 2 weeks ago. very nice car to drive. the manual made it fun. it wasnt fast(ran 14.5) but man i actually liked it more then my f-body.

you could tell it was designed for a chick but i liked it and would consider one for a DD

That's why I took a GT over an F-body (it is my DD). As a DD, it's much more comfortable than a Trans Am or Camaro. It's hard to get bored with any car with a V8, RWD, and manual. Plus the Mach 460 6-disc in-dash stereo is very nice too :headbang

I drove a Bullit edition and I could make a sandwich and eat it by the time I had to go from 2nd to 3rd. Nice looking, but SLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW.
