anything but flowmasters..... youd be better off jamming a sock in your tail pipe then running flowmasters.

Magnaflow. Sounds great, and it's stainless and cheap.

Gotta second the Magnaflows (cheap and sound Awesome), but Coop is right about the Borla if you want everything perfect. Borla has great craftmanship and although they probably won't be as "in you face loud" as the Magnaflows, over time you will appreciate how they are both mellower and sound great.

depends on the motor/car.... but i pretty much run the dynomax bullets on all my cars! they sound wicked and are cheap! they are pretty damn loud too, so if your doing a lot of street driving they might not be the best for you!

lol im only 21....i dont plan on falling out of the Stupid loud stage anytime soon but i do know exactly what you mean.

My cousin had an 03 Gt with borla catback. Just an amazing sound, but tends to sound different on 2V Gt vs Pushrod setups.

I might have to check out magnaflow.

Lol @ Glasspacks :thumbsup

I would have to agree. My '79 Camaro has Flowmaster Super 40's, and my Olds has Original 40 Series. I noticed a performance gain, not extreme, but still noticeable, and the sound is just awesome. HIGHLY recommended.

Ive always thought Borlas and Magnaflows sound great on mod motors but sound like complete shit on pushrods. Ive heard Spintechs on a guy's pushrod and those will be my next muffler. I have Flowmasters and I hate them with a passion. I remember seeing some testing where Flowmaster were THEE WORST for power, but I dont remember where I saw it.

I will never buy anything but a Maganflow. I will put my 3.5 Magnaflow race mufflers aganist anything out there as far quieting down and cool sound goes.
I have heard the smaller sizes do sound kind of crappy though.

Ill second the spintechs. My buddy has one on his lt1 trans am and its the best sounding 4th gen single exhaust I've ever heard by far.

I beleive pypes did a flow test with them, and if i recall there were a couple flowmasters that flowed like 10 CFM less then stock.....

I am hoping Hooker maximum flows sound good in 3" behind an x pipe, because that's what's in my 64, but I haven't started it yet:rolf
I liked the Pypes Race pro muffs on my 86 442 with x-pipe

Flowmaster Super 40 series, and Super 44 Series are excellent.......unless you have tried them yourself, don't let any shit-talking about them convince you otherwise. I have them, and a number of my friends' cars have them, and they are all-around GOOD.

I like MAC mufflers. I bought a set and will never go back to Flowmaster. They have a snarl to them I like.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL3ivaPUtZY

Your car from what your build sounds like would sound wicked I think, Plus the sound police dont fug with you cause it dosent have the deep bassy sound to it. When you on it it gets wicked sounding. I got a solid cam non roller and it sounds like a hopped up 5.0. Kind of sneeky if you wanna stay low key.

Voodoo Chick
05-17-2009, 01:20 AM
I think it depends on what application the mufflers are going to, also. My cars are 30 and 36 years old, big V8's, true dual exhaust....so the Flowmasters with that low, loud, deep bassy tone sound AWESOME, but maybe on a different car.........might sound odd.

badass88gt
05-17-2009, 01:44 AM
It depends what youre after. If you are looking for that "classic" musclecar sound, 2 chamber Flows are it. If youre looking for power, Flows are no good. Basically, stay away from the chambered mufflers and go with a straight-thru design.

I would say get whatever you think it's best for your set-up. who cares if you loose or gain 10-20hp? not going to help much

I have had many mufflers on my '79 over the years, Cherry Bombs, some truly horrendous sidepipes, straight-through mufflers, and now Super 40's......The Super 40's have, by far, out-performed the straight-through mufflers the car used to have......

84hurst
05-17-2009, 12:54 PM
Who needs mufflers?? Chop the old one out and weld in a straight pipe! As long as the exhaust comes out way in the back (as opposed to underneath the floorboards) it shouldn't be too loud in the car. But if you want a muffler I would recommend either Flowmaster 40 Series or Magnaflow. Magnaflow more so because it's stainless, a Flowmaster prolly won't last more than 3-4 years in Wisconsin winters.

This is going on a pretty good HP street car, that will only see nice days. And with long tubes and not being able to run it all the way back, i Must have a set of mufflers on the car. Magnaflow are kinda what im looking at getting. Just gotta figure out if the 3" ones will sound nice or not

I am so tired of my flowmasters, they just drone to much as a daily driver.
Leaning towards some ultra flows or something similar.
Or like I did on my Cobra, just ran no mufflers. Wasn't that bad, but I think the cats quieted it down...

That is my number one complaint with them, though I have found a supposed "fix" for them, I dont have the balls to try this:

Did i miss what the car is that this is going on? I'm sorry but everything i've seen/read on flowmasters hasn't been good, they tend to leave power on the table. They may sound good some times but personally i am going to go with the muffler that makes the most power.

Our 66' Mustang build. Max power isnt really a huge concern for me as i have a Plimpton Race Engines SBF :D going in and i have to make my baby 275's hook up.

Sound is the most important to me

Cool, on a unrelated note, have you looked into the new MT ET streets? I have seen some 400whp+ cars use those in a 275 size and hook pretty well.

Smokey1226

:D It will have et street Radials out back, and should be much better than 400whp

on the street any tire/hp combo is tricky to get setup

This is true.....an X-pipe creates a truly strange intimidating sound. I keep hearing people say that their Flowmasters have a "droning" quality.....I find this odd, as all my cars have Flowmasters, and none of them "drone." They all have a low, heavy rumble, but it's a luscious sound, lol!!

Every single Mustang with 2 chamber Flowmasters will drone. Guaranteed. Its in between 1900 and 2100 rpm.

Well, see, I don't have any Mustangs! My Camaros and my Oldsmobile don't drone.....they rumble.

If it sits anything like my 66 you won't be able to run anything bigger then 4" total thickness, which will also limit your choices

I like bassani's but can't say I ever heard one not on a mod motor. They sound awesome though imo. Ftr I have flows on my 66 stang. Nice n loud lol. I had thrush turbos on there before these and they were ok, just not loud enough though. I think the flows complement the solid lifter noise pretty well. Coming towards you, all you hear is those ticking away, leaving all you hear is the exhaust :)

magnaflows have been hit or miss for me. I've heard a couple cars that didn't sound all that great to me but at work we put some on a newer GTO and it sounded f-in tits. Same with spintechs, I have one buddy with a 5.0 that sound like absolute shit but one of my brother's buddys has a built up LT1 that sounds wild with em. I think all mufflers are like this though because from my experience you really don't truly know if a car is going to sound good or not till it's on the car. I've heard to simular cars with identical systems sound completly different. It's all hit or miss.
