I have lots of family members in GM dealerships and GM is forcing 2400 ( I believe ) to close by the end of 2010. NOT Good.

Yeah, thats the thing, those people have a pretty focused skill set. I don't think there are too many jobs in their market out there, probably best if those people went back to school. It seems the higher your education the better off you will be. Maybe not making a ton of money but it seems like you need to be overqualified to get almost any job these days.

so how exactly does a car company shut down dealers? I thought dealers are independently owned and operated..... Is Chrysler taking away franchise licenses?

Karps TA
05-14-2009, 12:14 PM
Exactly. They can stay open and sell used cars, or try and find a different brand to sell. But they can't sell X anymore.

With so many skilled people being SOL, atleast there should be no excuse for shoddy work now at the remaning dealerships.

not quite sure how they came up with the list. there are some large dealers on there. we were told that the first to go was going to be the dealerships that did not carry the full chrysler, dodge, dodge truck, and jeep lines. looking at the list, that was not correct?!?!? i am sure sales numbers, customer service numbers, and location were probably the largest factors.

Thats pretty much it, sorry to hear about your dealer being on the list, best of luck to you with what ever you do. This will be tough on lots of local families

Part of it will be dealerships that have other franchises on that list.

Think about it... Why does Dodge City of Milwaukee need to stay open when they bought out Subaru from Don Jacobs and are not a full Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep store anyways. ESPECIALLY when they have the Brookfield location that is a direct competitor that just built a new facility. I knew 100% the milwaukee store would go down just because of that.

Figure alot of the small town dealerships that are full lines were only selling maybe 5-6 cars a month. We'd get the reports all the time when i was at Dodge City of Brookfield.

I'm so glad I'm not working there anymore. And 2400 gm dealerships sounds like alot, but remember how many friggen chevy dealerships are on every corner. You can stand at Heiser Chevrolet, and point in any direction and there would be another Chevy dealership 5-10 miles away. There's got to be 10 just in the metro location of Milwaukee. That's unneeded. You know Holz will stay open. Maybe Bergstrom since they just did all that renovation, but figure Hall, Braeger, and Heiser are options to close. Same with Boucher. Cadillac/Chevy in West Bend for heiser I believe would make the list of closings since Bob Fish is right up the road and uptown is right down the road and they both do more business.

meaning just as I said it. I have nothing against Dodgeland, I was just curious how Chrysler came up with this list, and that question was answered already.

Crawlin
05-14-2009, 02:54 PM
Yah, Dodgeland made it because ewald merged their other places with it i'd imagine. plus that airstream dealer must be making serious dough (sarcasm, haha)

I can imagine the franchises putting a 20 mile radius on their dealers now, not just the 5 miles i think it is now.

there will be ALOT of land up for development soon. Hell I think EJ Salentine Pontiac/Buick will kick the bucket soon. Their income has to be just off of service customers.

Karps TA
05-14-2009, 02:56 PM
Salentine's kids are fighting to try and keep the dealership. I expect them to become like Sindic did when they lost Olds, just a used car dealer.

Just thinking about this domino affect... with all these technicians that will be out of work, it would be stupid for someone to enter the field now, so I'm sure admissions into schools such as UTI and Wyotech will drop off, which could force them to lay off instructors. Other local businesses that thrive off of dealerships will suffer too. Just a bad chain of reactions...

Crawlin
05-14-2009, 03:05 PM
oh yeah, it's gonna get REAL interesting REALLY quick once these dealers start shutting down. Imagine the people that maybe are leasing the land and don't actually own it. Or leasing buildings. All the small car lots don't have the capability to service the vehicles. Your wait time for service will be incredibly higher. That or the ones that will survive will set up larger service shops.

Look at the old Heiser Lincoln/Mercury. No one wants to buy that property on that side of town. And on the flip side, Jacobs on 164 isn't selling that property all that fast and that's a better area for industry being so close to Bluemound.

for $4000 dealers can join in the fight to save their franchises. unfortunetly federal bancruptcy laws trump state franchise laws :(. not much anyone is going to be able to do. the real crappy part. chrysler is unable to purchase parts inventories and vehicles back. worries about dealers getting "stuck" with their new cars that they cannot sell as new are now surfacing! just read the dealer letter. chrysler is literally washing their hands of these dealers.

Where was Heiser Lincoln Merc?

My pops works at Boucher Lincoln Merc on hwy 100 and he is actually doing pretty well lately. With spring around and the nice weather out, he reports very busy days, and the total sales he ends up with at the end of the month proves it. Don't get me wrong, its not off the chart sales, but still decent for this kind of economy.

Theres still people with money out there still buying crap, but if 789 chrysler dealers go down and who knows how many GM dealers, shits gonna hit the fan fast. I wonder if thats what will put wisconsin's unemployment rate over the 10% mark......

Hahaha, Frank Boucher was on that list? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That GM was all up on my shit after my JM&A rep told them I was available for work. Thank god AGAIN I didn't go back into Finance at the dealership there.

Heiser Lincoln/Mercury is just north of Good Hope on 76th street in Milwaukee. Not the best area as alot of the other dealerships are moving

I expect them to become like Sindic did when they lost Olds, just a used car dealer.

They also added a Richlonn's Tire shop in their bays. I can see dealers like salentine doing that, maybe leasing space to some service, brake, muffler, tire shops.

you will need top find a new dealer to go to for warranty work. as for when this is happening. the judge will review the case on the 3rd and if approved, the franchises will cease to exist on the 9th. not much time for the dealers to get their ducks in a row.

GM is going to talk today about closing 1200+ dealerships, so braeger might only have ford?

someone should just post up the list of the gm dealers that are going to be closing....havent been able to find much other than the ponti/saturn dealers...........

As far as sales at Northpoint.....yeah we still dont do the kind of numbers as the other Ford store, we are holding our own, however I really wish traffic was a little better

at least they are giving the dealers a chance to end the obligations on their own too, unlike chrysler.

Our General Manager read the letter to us at a meeting, Every Chrysler, Jeep, and/or Dodge dealer in the country got a certified letter Thursday in the mail from UPS. It was either a thumbs up or thumbs down. The shitty part was no one knew this was coming, It just showed up.
