View Full Version : HID for the Cobra

Well - I ordered a couple of the HID kits from the link that Pork had posted a while back and finally got around to getting them in.

Before I start - I have been working with HIDs since, literally, the first "kit" ever came out about 7 years ago (back when they were $1400 for a kit... and they were terrible). I am well aware of optics and how I am utilizing a HID bulb withing a reflector housing and although I would never recommend that.. I did a bit of research on both the fog lights and headlights in my Mustang and recognized that I could use a HID setup in them without blinding other drivers.

So here it goes - it's not quite a DIY, but I have installed a ton of these in different cars and can probably answer any questions you have. Also - I'm super anal about wiring and I'm sorry if it's hard to see as I prefer for the wiring to be invisible or blend in with the rest of the car.

So... since I put my new Nitto Nt05 tires on the back on Friday, I'm wanting to drive it (now that chords aren't showing :goof)! Since I've had these HID kits sitting on our family floor I figured I'd install them today...

This is all that you need to install a kit like this

Jacked it up a bit to get under the car - I realized that I had access to the fog lights from under the bumper even with all my intercooler piping in the way.

I connected the HID ballast and ignighter to the harness and attached heavy duty velcro to the back. I then applied the opposite side to the backside of the bumper frame so that I could remove it if I need to.

So here is the ballast mounted up above the fog light right behind the bumper

That was it for the foglights! Both sides were done the same and I measured what the lights were pulling - I don't need a wiring harness for the cobra, but depending on what vehicle you're wiring these into, you will probably want to build a harness.

The headlights are really easy as well and came with a harness because I am using a 9007 high/low kit so that I do not lose functionality of my headlights. The harness was probably one of the easiest harnesses I have ever installed into a car and was kind of like a octopus. Even the length of the wires was perfect.

Ran the harness to the other side of the car under the lip of the radiator support so there are no wires to be seen at all..

Can't even see any wiring other than the inline fuses which pop up right by the positive terminal -

Finished..

I really tried to tighten up the beam pattern so that I do not blind anyone.

5000k - they hardly have any blue to them at all. Every other DD I've ever had in the past few years came with OEM HIDs so I am very used to the white and prefer to have the light on the road.

The install took me maybe an hour and a half - and that includes taking my time adn throwing the frisbee for my dog the whole time.

I made a partial harness - but the kits are all plug and play. Incredibly easy to do.

Ricer?

I'm a fan of the 5k. I had that in my silverado, and now also in the trailblazer.

Good thing you included step by step pics. Now car_ramrod can continue to pimp out his lease.

how do the bulbs work, the high/low, are they retractable or do they tilt?

Huh?

The placement of the arc changes on the bulb - that changes where the light is output onto the road.

Looks dope. I've thought about doing this to my bike. I have a 65/70w bulb in it now, it's bright as shit, but the pattern is garbage. I think it's the shitty ricer sealed beam conversion housing I have.

No glare, really, which is AWESOME because I was so afraid to put them in reflector housing (especially after years of telling people how dumb that is). I couldn't be happier for the $100 I spent on both sets.

Honestly, for Nittos, they're awesome. As you know, 2nd gear wouldn't grab unless the bfgs were warm... these don't slip at all. Definitely made the car a lot more fun to drive now that the ass end isn't kicking out all the time.

Ryan, may have a few questions for you soon. I have both kits from my jeep, the fogs are direct replacement into the cobra, but the lows are 9006 in my jeep, assuming the ballasts are Ok, I will just get replacement bulbs for the 9007's.
