I am old enough to remember the 60's and owned or drove some of the muscle cars of that era. Never had a COPO but always liked the idea of a 427 sleeper. Long story short, I found a place in SE WI that specializes in restoring COPOs and just about any 1st gens and anything else but 1st gens are their specialty. Currently have a few in various state of restoration, also has a 69 RS Z28 with dual cross ram and 4 wheel disc all original car on the floor. Beautiful and the paint and body work is incredible and he will work on anything, not just old stuff. If you want a COPO he also build knock-offs. :)

Place is called Pats. It out on K just 45 on south side just before you get to K. If you guys still enjoy the old stuff, stop by and take a look at the eye candy.

"This is the process used by Chevrolet (and other divisions of GM) for internal orders for limited production of non-standard cars. The Pace Car Camaros that actually paced the Indy 500 (because of modifications needed to the cars to meet the special requirements of reliability and safety for race duty) were ordered via the COPO process. The COPO process was also used to build special show cars, and sometimes, for special competition-oriented cars. However, the COPO process was used more often for mundane special fleet orders and doesn't necessarily indicate a high-performance vehicle.

Most commonly known COPO cars were built during the 1st generation. The one well known 2nd gen COPO is COPO 9796, the tall, 3 piece rear spoiler for 1970 and early 1971 Camaros. "

The whole COPO story is incredible and worth looking into if you don't know the history. It was great time in GM's history and true factory sleepers.

I still love the sound of an L72.

Oops, didn't see Korndogg's post on COPO story! :)

My shop (Authentic Automotive) had tuned and polished-detailed the blue COPO that sold through Mecum for $800K-this was a "Real Deal" car and very nice. When purchased it had a later date engine but came with the #s matching unit so it was installed. Very cool car and a great part of musclecar history, but as with most rare factory musclecars it was a stone! Tough to make a "race engine" of its era street friendly!!
I know Chris and Pat- great guys!! I don't think there is anybody that knows Camaros better than Chris:thumbsup

DR. Ford, where are you located?

Honestly, if I bought a knockoff from Pat, I would add headers and get rid of the crossflow mufflers. The factory exhaust that GM put on F Bodies was a performance killer. I had a L78 Nova in 70 and thought I bought a stone as well. Once crossflow muffler was gone, it was a new car. Just a guess, but I am probably not providing any news here. :)

Pat's auto body is a great place. Pat is a great guy and he does excellent work. They have Mike Fisher helping them now as well, which is a hard tandem to beat

Chalk - You can not go wrong with this place!
