OK so my buddy has a 03 1500 with a 5.3l 55-60k miles
been running like crap lately after it was warmed up at idle the rpm's would dip way way down like to 200 and it would want to die...i scanned it and we got 4 codes i forget what they were but it was about the MAF being bad/multiple cylinder misfires and both banks running to lean

sooo he replaced the MAF sensor and the light went out and it ran good....

for about a week then it started acting up again and i scanned it and the 2 codes i get are P0171 and P0174 bank 1 & 2 running to lean...

my question is what could this be? 02 sensors? or something else?
any help or suggestions is appreciated
thanks Mike

intake gaskets most likely pretty common on these trucks. I am laid off i could take care of it for you this week.

x2 on the intake. Sounds like a serious vacuum leak.

ok this is not my truck its a guy that i work with... is thier a way i could "test" it easily to see if it is indeed the intake gaskets?

Sure spray carb cleaner around the intake gaskets and see how it runs then, or you can do a smoke test if you have the machine to do it.

what will happen if it is leaking with the carb cleaner?

it will idle higher or die with the carb cleaner

Not sure what book times are for the 5.3 but Im guessing average shop would be a few hundred parts and labor.

Typically leaking intake gaskets would give you poor idle when cold and then it would clear up as the truck warms up. If there was a problem with an O2 sensor it would misfire after the truck goes in to closed loop, but you would also have a position 1 O2 sensor low voltage code.

If it is intake gaskets, I'll do it for $200. LMK.

EDIT: I actually get parts cheaper than I thought, I can do it FOR $175

Just did one yesterday on my Uncle's 02 Silverado. His had both bank lean codes and a misfire, fuel trim was reading 25% long term, now it's right at 0% where it should be.
