View Full Version : Anyone have experience with Nissan Maximas?

My 2000 Nissan Maxima SE is bogging like a Mofo...I don't know much about the motor, But apparently the car has no spark plug wires, and has a distributor-less ignition? :confused

Car only has a cold air intake. Ill be taking a stab at replacing the Spark plugs tomorrow which will hopefully help this issue.

Any tips/advice is appreciated.

lots of problems with mass air flow sensors on the max

Its probably a coil on plug design, most newer cars are. The spark is fired electronically, no need for a distributor, you will probably notice the boot going onto the plug is kind of large, this is the coil.

No distributor, no carb.... Say it ain't so.

You get a CE light at all?

You can definately start with the basics, like plugs and fuel filter. Then if possible access to a scanner of some sort would be very huelpful since it is likely a sensor issue. Could be something as simple as an o2 sensor, could also a MAF sensor as previously mentioned... Scanner should help you get it narrowed down.

+1 on the mass air flow sensor.. Especially if running a cold air intake. Have seen more than a few lately.

Ultimately of the check engine light is on. Start there, have it scanned and find out what codes are in it. Alot of parts stores will do that for free. It may send you in a different direction like o2 sensors, plugged cat ect,ect

I would check the "cold air intake" and verify the couplers are not torn or ripped letting unmetered air in. Everything after the MAS needs to be sealed tight.

My friend has one from about the same period and he changes O2 sensors about as often as he changes the oil.... Check that...

no check engine lights on at all, Replaced the plugs yesterday, and inspected the CAI, everything is fine. Pulled and cleaned the MAF, unplugged the battery for a few minutes, hooked everything back up, still bogs like a mofo. Thinking I might need to buy a new MAF..

Guess I'm just hoping I don't drop $100+ on a new one and it doesn't solve the problem.:punch:

Maybe try a hefty dose of Seafoam. One can in the gas tank, one can in thru the PCV Vacuum line or brake booster vacuum line. Might be some carbon built up somewhere or maybe a couple injectors are plugged.

Test the MAF to see if it's defective before buying one.....:)

How?

And I tried running a Fuel system cleaner in it. No help.

In addition to the MAF, try looking into the engine coils. They might be weak. I know they had a recall on this issue in 2004.

Probably not the best way to diagnose a problem!! :stare :rolf

But it'll no longer be a problem.:rolf

Well....you do have a point there......:rolf :thumbsup

Get a scanner and actually diagnose the problem instead of just shooting the dark and buying new parts.

PM me the year/make/model etc. and I'll back to you with the info for testing it......:thumbsup

There are NO codes being thrown.

Ya know, now thinking back. My MAF wire broke on my Crown Vic and the car was kinda bucking and surging but at freeway speeds. That damn thing never did set a check engine light either. Hope you find the problem quickly!!

Took it into Midas today and they put it up on the lift. Checked the cats out, ran some tests on the fuel system, and vacuum lines..only to come up with nothing! Said it doesn't seem like the Cats, and its tough to tell whats going on with NO codes being thrown on the car. They said its really weird that NO codes are being thrown for how bad it bogs.

I'm leaning more towards the MAF again now:chair:

Anyone know someone with a 00 Maxima that will let me test out their MAF sensor?!

Does the car have an oil air filter like a K&N?
Could it possibly ruin the MAF sensor?

There are NO codes being thrown.

Most of the decent scanners will show you the live data.

Read the data coming off the MAF to see if it looks good when the car is bogging.

Dropped $125 on a new MAF sensor today, and it 100% fixed the Problem.

Night and Day difference. :thumbsup
