View Full Version : Metal Bands?

Do you consider groups like Poison, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Twisted sister, Kiss, and so on... to be 'Metal Bands'?

I was watching VH1'S "Top 10 Metal Bands" and when Poison, Motley Crew, and Kiss came in @ 10, 9, & 8 I though to myself "WTF" and quickly switched the channel. I think calling bands along those lines metal bands is a pretty far stretch. Hard Rock band or Hair Band sure....but Heavy Metal???? :chair:

"Back in the day" we always called it "Hair Metal."

Then there were the weird, grey area bands that didn't fit anywhere......like WASP, too heavy/crude to be "hair metal," and King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Accept, etc......Damn, I love those bands........I SOOO miss the 80's........

Good stuff
Heavy metal story: breaking the boundaries of speed and sound (http://www.syl.com/travel/heavymetalstorybreakingtheboundariesofspeedandsoun d.html)

The first heavy metal bands, such as 'Accept', 'Dio', 'Iron Maiden', 'Manowar' and 'Metallica' originated in the early 80s. Many of them are already classics, some are still making music and releasing successful albums. The early 80s were the period of classic metal notable for classical music influence and anthemic choruses and characterized by the bands like 'Accept' and 'Iron Maiden'.

During the 80s period new subgenres went emerging, including black metal, death metal, thrash metal, and others. Many bands embarked on a heavier sound and even further increase in tempo. Among the experimenters was the San Francisco quartet 'Metallica'. Today they are considered the pioneers of thrash metal and one of the most innovative metal bands ever.

Since the release of their debut album 'Kill 'Em All' in 1983, 'Metallica' were head and shoulders above all pretenders to the throne of thrash metal selling more than 200 million albums. Their album 'Metallica' released in 1991 became the best-selling metal album having sold over 8 million copies in the US and 7 million in other countries.

Those are more death/black metal, than metal, I think.

The 2nd wave of metal after the 80's, were bands like the deftones, KoRn, coal chamber, sevendust, chevelle, reveille, kittie, godsmack, slipknot, disturbed, etc.

Nowadays, i'd say the "emo" bands are closer to metal than anything else, like Senses Fail, The Used, Alexisonfire, Thrice, Underĝath, Avenged Sevenfold, Finch, Silverstein, My Chemical Romance, Emanuel, Chiodos, etc.

I think part of the problem is people immediately combine "hair metal" with "heavy metal". I'm a big fan of all of it, the hair bands, the old school 80s metal, etc. I dont think the hair bands should even be called hair "metal", but thats the way it goes I guess. I'm still a huge fan of all of it because I was around when it was happening the first time.

What a load of shit. Who ever wrote that article is an idiot. I guess the fact that Black Sabbath was writing heavier stuff than any of those bands listed back in the early 70's doesn't count? Sabbath released their self titled album in 1970. After being told about the band by a friend in junior high, I bought my first Sabbath 8-track (yeah, that's right 8-track :flipoff2:) Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath in 1974. That was Sabbath's 5th album. Early 80's indeed...:durr

I remember a few shops like that.......sad that they are all gone. Seems like all the really good stuff, music, shops, everything, are all gone and over. I remember when I was really young, me and my friends listening to that music, and at the time, we really believed maybe it was about some ancient, magical prophecy, that the bands that performed it really knew something arcane........it was fun to be that innocent, and those times were great.

My nephew Allen used to play drums for this band.
His favorite experience was playing in Romania in Vlad Tepid's castle.
http://www.rictusgrin.com/home.html
Bands like Kiss, Slayer, and others of that ilk are pop-metal, metal for the mainstream. The heavier stuff we all know about; death, gore, etc. I like some of it, but I think the guttural throat screaming is getting to be very over done. Aside from that, some of the stuff coming out of Norway and other Scandinavian countries is pretty intense. The term Heavy Metal originated in an Iron Butterfly song about heading out in fast cars looking for adventure, Born To Be Wild. It really wasn't about bikes. That was because it was featured in that biker flick, Easy Rider.

The issue here is that Metal is a very broad genre of music as you can tell by the bands already listed in this thread. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres) lists 19 different genres plus an additional 11 cross-genres of metal. Chances are pretty good no one person will like all of the genres, but who's to say one is true metal versus another. Although I will say that glam shit from 80's was just super gay cock rock.

Ya, alot of things some may lump into the "metal" category are VERY different. I think that a lot of bands are really more "hard rock" than the spirit of metal. Metal to me has to be the hardest/heaviest thing you can find, regaurdless of sub-genre. Back then, metal was Sabbath/Ozzy, Motorhead etc. Today I think its bands more like BFMV, As I Lay dying and some of the like. I will be honest that I haven't followed any "underground" music in a year or so, not sure whats changed
