In india it is so:

introducing the tata nano. with 33hp it has a Top speed of 43 mph. Designed to get India out of motorcycles and into cars.

Honestly, I think we should sell cars similar to this in the states. These things are no worse than motorcycles or mopeds in terms of safety. Something inexpensive, very small...maybe restrict the top speed to 65mph or something with a larger engine/safer platform, put licensing restrictions on them (similar to getting a motorcycles license). But keep the price in the 3-5G range for a basic commuter car.

They don't have to extract you from a moped that has form fitted to you. I'd rather buy a 3k used car

yeah that looks really safe.......

I mean, in todays economic times, what do you really get for 1900 unless it is a good deal from a friend?

That's a coffin on wheels. You crash in that you might as well be buried in it. Because they probably won't be able to get you out of that tin can.

I think you'd be safer in a side-by-side ATV. I bet if someone stateside tears one apart you'd find a ton of under-engineered stuff on them. I suspect they're disposable cars. Once it won't start throw it away and buy a new one.

You first. India has the same kinda quality cars China does. That's a fact.

Crash tests on sh*tty cars like these are horrendous.

And the Tata Nano is old news... like 2 year old news.

If this car is anything close to their communications and electrical infrastructure abilities, I think I'll pass.

Those aren't communications lines or power cables. They're nets to catch the bodies from washing out to sea after the next tsunami.

These cars were made for poor people to be able to afford a new car....yes it may not be safe to our standards but its better than nothing. I'd rather buy an old used neon for 2-3k but for them thats not possible.

Keep in mind these are the guys who bought Jaguar and Land Rover.

I find it bizarre that some would be worried about safety in something like this, but then turn around and get in a motorcycle....a FAR less safe vehicle.

Personally, while I wouldn't want THIS car, build something similar. Make it a tad safer (and subsequently heavier), but then pair it with a more powerful engine. Something like a Smart car, but not to the same safety standards. Maybe a few hundred pounds lighter, maybe not as tall. Pair that with a basic engine with similar emission requirements that motorcycles have to pass. This would be a MUCH cheaper car, MUCH "safer" with better performance than the nano or even smart car, with better mileage to boot.

But on a bike you can use it's speed and handling to get out of trouble too, the nano has neither:goof

Crash safety does concern me after seeing over 2000 crashes.;)

What you guys don't realize is that in India, most people can't afford a real car. Some families... yes, entire families ride around on a scooter together. Having 4 wheels in a sea of two wheelers is like being the guy with one eye in the world of the blind.

Not to mention that traffic is so congested there that reaching speeds above 15mph in the city is almost unheard of.
