A motorist killed early Saturday in a high-speed car accident in Waukesha County has been identified as Gerald C. Rutz of New Berlin.

Rutz, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported at 6:42 a.m. and occurred on Winkleman Road in the Town of Merton.

Investigators said Rutz was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown about 150 feet from his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer, which officials believe was traveling more than 100 mph.

According to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, a passing motorist called 911 to report the one-car crash and also attempted to perform CPR on Rutz.

There are no indications that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident, nor that any other vehicles were involved, officials said.

If I'm out doing tuning runs in the back roads, I'll usually wear my helmet during the runs, too.
People tend to give funny looks when you pull up to an intersection with a racing helmet on. :durr

I know of him. He lived in my parents neighborhood and stopped by a few times while we were working on the cobra. He seemed like a nice kid and knew a little about cars. I think the evo was his summer toy because I saw a ratty honda with altezzas in the driveway quite a bit.

Anyhow, I wear my belt in the Mustang especially since the damn thing annoys the crap out of me if I dont, and in the truck, well that is hit or miss if I wear it or not, I will always wear it on the freeway though

I knew him pretty good in high school he graduated with me. More kids have died from my class from car crashes. It's sad to think that a seat belt was all they needed. :(

Not to downplay the importance of wearing a seatbelt but I'm not sure he would have survived even IF he was wearing one......

first off. for me KNOWING this guy personally, this is a BS thread. Gerald was a VERY down to earth guy.... very curious on why he was driving at the speed that he was, since he's always been against it.

second, every time I've ridden with him,, he has worn his seatbelt. therefore I believe something was going on in his life ( gf / wife, job etc )

do I agree on what he did? NO!!! and I'm happy that he only took his own life and no one elses or injuying anyone else

just knowing someone personally, and seeing people talk about them in in this way sucks!

we have all made wrong choices on the road! we are all lucky enough that we havn't made a stupid mistake on the road to cause a accident, injury...or worse...death

Domo, I agree...What he did was not the brightest thing, but to bash the guy is just ignorance!!!

Also agree with Domokun on this. Gerald was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He would stop by the shop all the time. Its very sad what happened.

This is about the choice not the person. Great people make really bad decisions.

ive been down that road a few times in the past and yes it wouldn't take much 100mph would easily get you airborne.
