Id check out wheel and sprocket. Its spring time should have some deals pretty soon. And can also check out like last year or 2 year old models that are price cut.

My wife is looking at buying a bike this year and so I asked a HUGE bike enthusiast friend of mine what he recommended. His basic premise was actually that if you buy local just make sure you ask them their honest opinion, most bike places are pretty good and will steer you away from the ones that are total crap.

With that being said he then said, if you are willing to buy online you will get the best deal and pointed me at:
bikesdirect.com

He basically he said that the bike frames are at least as good as the big names, however they are cheaper since they don't have the big$ name on the front. But he said more importantly those bikes listed use MUCH better components than what you would find at any local bike shop for anything near the price. After looking around a bit I will admit it definitely looked like that. They had a ton of stuff listed there with great shifters, great struts and disk brakes, for like $400 to $500 and the equivalent big name stuff was about double that! The last thing to note is that if you go the bikesdirect route he mentioned that you would have to do some minor assembly yourself which shouldn't be an issue for us car guys, but otherwise he said the local bike shop can do it for you for about $50.

Good luck!

I've been looking a little on craigslist. Lots of 26" MBs out there.

Nan, what kinda riding do you plan on doing? If your anything like me, your going to hate shifting. Get a single speed, will save you money and you can spend more money on a fork if you don't have to spend money on derailers.

Also, Wheel and Sprocket will deal but you gotta know what you want and be good at negotiating. Then look the bikes over after you buy, they like to switch wheel sets out.

As far as bikes, depending on what you want you can get a sweet redline for less then 500 brand new:

I bought my Trek 69er for a grand last fall, got a super deal on it though since it was an end of season sale.

If you are looking for a good bike, go to Ben's Cycle. Ask for Vinnie, the owner.

I believe there is a member here that works at or owns a bike shop. Trail side or something like that. Maybe look into that see if he can help you out. Don't remember who, but I am sure someone does.
