Ok, 3 weeks ago when we got that little friday storm, I go out to start the truck and it cranks but super slow. I take the starter off, it apears to be the stocker with 218k on it. I bench test it and yeah it spins super slow. So I go to the parts store and get a brand new lifetime warrenty starter (I think it was a remy). Truck stared great with it, all was good the last storm we had 2 weeks ago. This morning I get the call to go plow, and the damn thing won't start again. Battery is full, I can hear the solinoid click when I hit the key, but no cranking, The lights just dim like its trying. I hooked it up to my other truck thinking it just didnt have enough juice, still nothing. Got under there, all the wires are tight and look good, tapped it with a hammer a few times, still nothing.

Any ideas?

Starter is probably junk. I replaced the starter in my 2003 Sierra and Lisas 95 Blazer and had the aftermarket staters gernade within the first week. I returned them both and only use GM starters now :)

WTF, I bought the top of the line starter at advance, and it was brand new, not reman. Well I guess I know what I will be doing tonight.

What's the voltage drop across your battery cables? You can have the greatest battery and starter, but if the link between sucks half the power, you're Effed!

Just got in from dicking around with the Bitch. I think the side post threads on the battery are shot. The pos cable was a little loose, gave it a slight turn and it got tight then felt like it was stripping.

Got in hit the key and it cranks but it wont start, sounds like its not cranking fast enough. Got the block heater plugged in to warm it up a little, just hoping to get it to start once so I can pull it in the garage. Its cold as hell working on it in the back yard laying in the snow.

Yeah, once I get it into the garage Im switching it over to top post and making sure all the grounds are good.

Load test battery, should be 50% of rated value at 9.6v

Check volts/ground at battery and starter, check drop.

Simple amp clamp at the bat cable during cranking will
confirm starter load, doubt it should exceed 180a.

Take some jumper cable from the bat down to the starter
if you dont have a DVM or amp clamp, this will bypass
the starter cable and ground cable as the problem, will
be undersized but if it cranks better your on the right
path pf diagnosing a bad starter.

Well the Bitch started today, runs fine, but it sounded like something was going on on the starter side. Almost like it was still spinning along with the motor or something. Oh well, I got it in the garage and Ill deal with it next week or something. I'm guessing the starter is fuct though.
