Anyone have an idea how much more digital cable costs over basic cable? I cant take it anymore, if my parents want me to work all these crazy hours they can afford to get me DVR! Thats fair right?

Rates are going to be similar for Charter and Time Warner since we compete with the same companies ATT and Dish. If you want to keep your same channels and just upgrade to a digital box it should be around an extra five bucks a month. Extra channels are more etc etc. Charter's DVR rentals are 15 bucks a month extra which should be similar to TWs. Other factors can come into play like are you in a package, do you have internet or phone? Sometimes they have deals that can knock the price off rentals down. If anybody has any cable questions hit me up and am more than willing to lend a hand.

Yes, we do have cable internet. Basically i dont need any extra channels, although my dad would like a 24/7 hunting channel if they have that?

I just want DVR?!

Then it should just be a rental fee for the DVR. If he wants the hunting channel he will probably have to get whatever tier that is on so you might get other channels that you will never watch.

The actual DVR features are integrated into a digital box so in a word yes also if you have an HD TV all DVRs have built in HD tuners so you might get some HD channels at no extra cost. Although I must admit that Time Warner does have Scientific Atlanta equipment which is much nicer than our Motorola DVR here and dont get me started on the Moxi aka the boat anchor.

Can't one just buy a DVR and hook it up?

Most 3rd Party DVRs require monthly subscriptions... so it kinda makes it pointless to go with a TiVO. If you have a media center PC with a TV tuner (or just a TV Tuner card as most have DVR capabilities built in) you can have TiVo capabilities on channels below 110 for free, no subscription costs. Only problem is you can't do channels higher than about 110 without it getting more complex.

TW Digital Access package (150 channels) is 24.10, 8.95 for DVR service... and 4.65 additional for HDTV DVR.

Thanks for posting the prices since I have always wondered this as well. The only DVR that I have found that does not need a monthly subscription is the stand alone Moxi which you can buy on Amazon.

In order to get service you need to rent a cable card which plugs right into the box but you need a technician to come out and pair the card.
