Looking at buy a new camera and i'm not ready to commit to a full slr camera so im leaning heavily towards this camera http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630 From the reviews and everything i have read it seems like a slr for beginners. So im wondering what the opinions of the bcm photo gods are on this camera.

I like it! I have an earlier version the S3 IS 6Mp 12X zoom. This is a great entry level camera if you don't want to go all the way with DSLR. The SX10 has a full array of features for the casual photo taker. I like having the long zoom without having to carry a bag of lenses. Optical Zoom is what you want. Digital Zoom blows.
They also have the SX1, sweet, which has the CMOS sensor, but for the $599 you could get into a Canon DSLR package (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120278) with a CMOS sensor.
Good review here:thumbsup http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091703canon_sx1is_sx10is.asp

First, I'm no expert, I just finance my wife's obsession. What I did was get a digital Rebel and a Cybershot. I found the Cybershot is good for about 90% of what we take pictures of, but for those special shots when you need adjustablility, we use our Rebel.

That being said, I think unless you are "obsessed" and willing to lug around an SLR, batteries, lenses, and such, you are probably on the right track. I have about $2K wrapped up in cameras and lenses, and that is cheap. I know some of these guys are the types to drop $2K on a lens.

If you want to play with some camera options, ask Nick. He seems to not only have tons of time invested in research, but he probably has a really nice "like new" camera he's unloading.

Yes and our women love us for it...not really.

That SX10 is as close to a dslr as you are going to get without actually buying a dslr. Huge focal length, good f-stop range and will drop all the way to ISO80 and right back up to ISO1600....but sadly no RAW capture.

For $399 + tax you are looking at a good used XT, XTi or 20D/30D though as well.

That's a really nice piece but like Scott said, you could probably get into D-SLR for about the same money and have alot more expandability down the road.

You mean you don't have your wife convinced that all those extra lenses came in the box with the camera?!?!? I do... :devil J/K.... :goof

I bought the SX10 about a month ago, I liked the idea of a DSLR especially the different lenses but had to come to grips with the fact that I'm no photographer and I really cant afford to become one, I have enough expensive hobbies. After buying and using the SX10 what with its vast choices and settings I am really glad I stuck with a point and shoot.
All the numbers and letters and all that crap makes my head spin, it really put me in my place and I use the SX10 mostly in auto.
I love looking at great pictures but and have realized I don't want to learn how to take them.

It takes really good pictures, I really wanted a decent zoom lens so this really fills that bill for me nicely. If I had to do it again I would buy the same camera.
The SX10 was a real upgrade from my 3x zoom 3MP Cassette sized fine pix, tho the pocket camera aspect was nice, I still have it and it works fine so.

Reading this webby helped me narrow my choice and figure out what I wanted.

I bought my girlfriend a Canon G10. It's pretty awesome as far as I'm concerned but I'm perfectly happy with a $100 camera that isn't grainy and deals with low light well. All my pictures are usually cleaned up (well, I spend about 30 seconds on each picture tops) afterwords anyway so it's not as important as long as I get something decent out of the picture.

The ginormous LCD screen is pretty awesome.

It has a weak flash as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably end up buying her a Canon Speedlite flash for her birthday.

Neither one of us wants to carry around the crap associated with DSLR photography. And since she went to school for photography and journalism/marketing it's about as close as you can get to a SLR/DSLR while still fitting in your pocket.
