I was driving by the airport today and saw the Antonov AN-225 parked by the Midwest Airlines hanger on 6th & Grange. If there are any airplane buffs here, definately check it out. One of the KC-135 refuelers was next to it and my God it was just dwarfed by it!

Now I fail to understand how Bernoulli's principle can cause enough lift from a void in atmospheric pressure under the wings to get that BUILDING of the ground!!!!

That thing is just HANGING out of the sky !!! I bet that thing stalls super easy, you wont be doing any aerobatic moves with that pickle, not to mention any abrupt moves, that thing would f uk some sh it up if it ever went down!!!.

Big wing = big lift, its simple

That plane is a turd though from what I've heard and the pilot needs to be thinking 10 miles ahead of him. Then again, that is when it is fully loaded. empy, It should be a bit sporty (overstatement). Most planes are expected to be able to perform minimum flight manuvers when fully loaded. Empty, It could handle 2g's; when empty, close to three. This is more than you are normally exposed to when flying in a commercial aircraft.

Yes i know... hence my explanation on Bernouli's principle...,

I was mocking the size of this focker, and this thing id be willing to be bet is NOT a sporty handler!!! It proably cant maintain all that high of airspeed to support for any kinda of fancy moves other than basic flying and you can probably stall it really easy if you try to point it up to quick on a take off or any abrupt moves that require rise in altitude because of the shear size, it dont matter how many turbines you got pushing it or huge wing span it dont accelerate or handle like no F-16....

you know...the funny thing about Bernouli's principle is that it seems soooo simple to understand, yet to come up with it from stratch as he had to would seem quite difficult.

Yeah, I saw that thing, and I was wondering at the time how much shorter it was than the C-5 Galaxy. The 6 jet engines baffled me, this bird was introduced after my Marine Air Wing time. Didn't know what it was.
When you said "Largest in the World", I was confused because this bird was not as tall as the Galaxy birds I remembered.
Apparently, this bird drove here on the highway, because this site declares that the AN-224 hasn't flown since 1997, and that the largest bird is still the Spruce Goose, and the largest bird flying today is the UNMANNED Helios!
www.csd.uwo.ca/~pettypi/elevon/gustin_military/bigyear.html

Comparing the manned A/C C-5 and AN-224,
length: C5 - 75m, AN224 - 84m
wingspan: C5 - 68m, AN224 - 88m
height: C5 - 19.84m, AN224 - 18.1m
payload: C5 - 381Mg (wartime), AN-224 - 275Mg

I didn't convert the KiloNewtons to Foot-Pounds for the total thrust from the 4 jets vs 6 jets.
So, the Galaxy is longer than it's own wingspan, unlike this thing; and the Galaxy is therefore both shorter in lenght and wingspan. But the Galaxy is taller and by far has greater payload and cargo capacity in every measure.
I guess if larger means wingspan and length, this is; but the fuselage (and displacement) of the Galaxy is much larger than this "Largest".
Since this thing is no longer flying since 1997, be sure to take some pics.

Helecopters... how they work? I can do that, but it will take some time for me to write it all down. Right now I have to be at work at 11 and it is 1030. I had a radio contro helicopter at one poin and later sold it. But rigth now, I have 12 rc airplanes in various stages of construction and destruction. They range from a slow "park flyer to gliders to a pylon racer (170 mph) to a scale warbird.

Just Google some of Igor Sikorsky's tech notes and copy & paste 'em.

I wonder what it's going to be taking out of here- something from P&H Harnishfager?

Quick note about the Antonov.

It has two rudders instead of one like the galaxy. Because of this, it is shorter in height. The c-5 also has a "T" tail. The advantages of the dual rudders is that they can be placed behind the engines so the exhaust flows over the control surface and makes them more sensitive, especially at lower speeds.

Also, the "largest plane" can be defined in many different ways. The helios wins only with it's wingspan, but weighs less than most of the planes found as mitchel. A 747 weighs more than the spruce goose and has a greater payload and can go twice as fast. I think the wing design is more important then the wingspan.

How about fusealage diameter...

Now that this has been resurrected..... I thought Milwaukee didn't currently have a big enough runway to accommodate these big suckers. I heard they were going to build a very long one once the 440th is gone...

1 left /19 right can accomidate any aircraft in the world. So I think its long enough for now. Unless Voyager and **** Rutan makes another mission I think we are ok
