Someone has an 87 IROC for sale (small dealership) and I could be interested in it. But I don't know what makes an IROC what it is. What engine, power, maf...

He wants 5k$ (3k for my mustang) for it with 87k miles, but the kbb put it around 3700. It supposedly has a new engine in it, but I am seeing hood pins which makes me suspect that it has been beaten on and mistreated.

Also, are these good cars to turbo or s/c??? What should I be looking for and asking. Better yet, is there anyone who could take a look at it to tell me if the price is right or if I am buying a problem? This car is in Germantown.

This car is an automatic and I found a picture that looks just like it, even the color and rims...

IROC = fully loaded it should be a 5.7 and has the 16inch iroc rims and should have a borg warrner rear end with 3.27 gears for the auto and a aluminum driveshaft and might have leather interior i know i am missing things but it should be just like my GTA but in diffrent clothes!!!!!!!!

IROC is generally a performance package but really more trim, from what I've seen. Some could be had with 15" wheels stock and carbed and 88'+ TBI motors, not TPI(if memory serves). Like said, *some* have the 350 TPI motor which would be the most desireable....better suspension and brakes too?

305 TPI/5 speed cars are often made into pretty darn quick cars, FYI.

I've never seen a turbo-ed TPI motor. If you are making mega power with TPI you pretty much have to upgrade everything intake wise, it is costly! Mini-ram stuff, etc.

While 5k isn't a bad price(really depends on the car obviously) I would see if you can get it lower...87k miles is relatively low, but unless the car is near mint I would suggest lower....assuming its a 305 TPI car. If its carbed then even less....350 that might be pretty fair. :confused

It IS a 350 and it has the TPI.

TPI is direct port injection, not throttle body injection, right?

225 hp on a 350? my pony has 225 on a 302. Are the iroc's MAF or a system like the speed density found on my stang (throttle position + rpm = fuel injected).

Also, good body & good interior.

The other side?!? I think you have been watching Star Wars a little too much. Might I remind you that my other car is an astro. I just play both sides.

Is it the original motor? 8th digit should be an 8 for the 350, F for the 305. Id definately verify this. Many people claim a 350 and its a 305 or was originally a 305 car. A replacement 350 is better than a 305, if you dont mind buying a modded car...but IMO doesnt help the price as if it were an original L98 motor car.

They might only make 225 hp but TPI is a torque monster, not high end hp. You dont see any TPI cars with higher gears than 3.45 for this reason, they run out of breath up high....down low is where its at, and where the fun is for many people :3gears:

TPI is batch fire. Definately not TBI. TBI is almost like a carb. MAF is good for bolt on mods too, no need for custom PROM burning. Add headers and a better exhaust system, and other basic add ons like an open air cleaner, maybe a better cam and some slight porting of the plenum and you should be pretty happy I'd think.

I think stock in the 1/4 they ran low 14's at best :confused .

Read all the info at www.thirdgen.org. Good source for all 3rd gen f-body stuff.

Test drove it...

POS

The car didn't want to drive straight, it pulled hard to the left. The rear end made noise. It didn't sound good. Didn't shift good. It was also very slow. My mustang could smoke it probably, especially off the line. That car was a dog till 40 in first and then it died off after 55. The car never got into 2nd under power (didn't want to go too fast around there)

In other words, I'm still looking.

I should probably buy something older anyway (60's early 70's).

The bad part is that some kid will buy it for 5k too...
