View Full Version : Would I easily be pulled over for this?
I installed a new undertail on my SV650, but don't want to drill into it. I was thinking of mounting like the other motorcycle in the second pic.
Any police on here think I would be harassed about this a lot?

Not a cop, but I know alot of bikes have their plates mounted like the 2nd pic shows and they have no problem. BUT, law states (I believe) that the plate has to be lighted, so if you run into the wrong cop you may be SOL.

TECHNICALLY, i believe your not spoused to move it from stock/factory location and it MUST be lite at night. BUT i think you could get away with it.
thanks for the nice compliments guys! :)
I wonder if theres a way I can rig a pointing LED so it directs down right onto the plate... That would be sweet. Hidden kind of.

^^^Lmao that's so true. Anyways, from what I've gathered as long as it's lit and they can see it behind you you will be fine. Like flick said they sell mounting bolts that light up via led, I'm sure thats efficient enough.

Don't look at me.. I've never stopped a motorcycle in my life..
As long as it's displayed then that would be good enough for me.. I mean after all it is a motorcycle and doesn't offer the same space as a car does..

As long as your not doing anything stupid or out of control (ie:wheelies, 150mph, etc) you won't stand out enough to get pulled over. I rode my old Honda CBR 600 RACE BIKE with no headlight, no brake lights, no turn signals, no mirrors, slicks, no speedo, no plate, and race number plates on the front and rear on the street for an entire season 2 years ago and never got pulled over. Well, with the exception of once on Capital drive but the cop let me go since he had no clue what the hell my bike was lol.

This is my current bike now, '02 GSXR 600. All stock, with the exception of the rear fender eliminator and Galfer SS lines and brake pads. Here's a shot I took from September:

I rode like this for 2 years and last year was the first time I got cracked for the plate while I was riding on highway 100. Was told to get lights on the plate, but I have yet to do so. Depends on the cop and where you're riding imo.

Call me old fashioned. Will prolly tuck it under the seat when and if I ever get a fender eliminator.

Although I do like the way the lines of the tail section and plate parallel the lines of the tail light. I bobbed 1" from the tail light by the way.

Nice looking ride!
Personally I like option 2 better. The plate will still deflect some of the water spray / rooster tail if you get caught out in the rain.
On my 919, I chopped the stock black plastic way back and screwed onto that, but I've been meaning to fab up a bracket to clean her up a bit more.
Maybe once you get that sorted out I can drop off my bike :D

Considering I dont right on the street ever anymore this really doesnt concern me. But ive ridden my bikes, track prepped (no lights or plates) on the street quite a bit in the past and have never had a issue. Not sure if cops even looks at bikes unless there doing somthing stupid.
Make sure it is displayed horizontally, lighted isn't an issue as they are reflective. Verticle WILL get you cited.
Thanks. Yeah i think i've decided to keep it horizontal. As to how deep or far back into the fender, i don't know. Thoughts?

I put mine back far enough to keep it out of the way form the tire with enough tire clearance for a fat chick to sit on the thing :goof i bent it up a bit as well to get it just right.

many factory bikes come with the plate mounted the way you want. Just get a light on it like everyone said. I have one sad little LED lighting up my plate and I've never been stopped for it. Although I do know someone on here who has :rolf
so far as regulations there are tons defining how a plate can be displayed and lit.....but most cops aren't going to know those....sure is a pita sometimes with designing new bikes.
Mounted the plate today.

The flags on the wall are telling me something fun is hiding under the covers.
As for the plate, looks pretty clean. Personally I wouldn't tuck mine in so far. Is it completely visible from directly behind? If not, let us know if it draws un-needed attention.
It s actually pretty visible from vehicle height. While standing around the bike you can clearly see it actually. I may rig up some LED's in there to illuminate it from each upper corner of the plate.
