'SpongeBob' may go dark on Time Warner
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081231/ap_on_bi_ge/viacom_time_warner_cable

LOS ANGELES – "SpongeBob SquarePants" may be getting squeezed off of Time Warner Cable.

Media giant Viacom Inc. said its Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and 16 other channels will go dark for 13 million subscribers at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if a new carriage fee deal with Time Warner Cable is not agreed upon by then.

The impasse would mean "SpongeBob" and other popular shows like Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" and Stephen Colbert's "The Colbert Report" will be cut off, said spokesman Alex Dudley, a vice president at Time Warner Cable. The nation's second-largest cable operator primarily serves customers in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas.

Viacom has asked for fee increases of between 22 percent and 36 percent per channel, an amount that could increase customers' cable bills, Dudley said. Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said the requested increase was in the very low double-digit percentage range.

"The issue is that they have asked for an exorbitant increase in their carriage fees and their network ratings are sagging," Dudley said. "Basically we're trying to hold the line for our customer."

Well I know if you have a XBOX 360. You can get a extra piece for it that does a pretty cool thing. I heard it can wirelessly show whats on your computer screen right on your TV. So if you download movies and that on your computer you then can watch it on your big screen.

For its part, Time Warner said Viacom's demands for higher fees were "egregious," particularly at a time when the country is in the throes of an economic recession and subscribers are sensitive to costly cable bills.

"We are being put in an awkward spot," Time Warner Cable spokesman Alex Dudley said. "Advertising revenue stinks so they are looking to stick our customers for the difference. We have to hold the line for our customers."

What really pisses me off is these stupid ads running across the bottom of the screen. ******* TW is probably getting thousands of calls from angry idiots now.

This is why they are pushing the price lock guarantee so much right now. You are locked in for two years at a set price. So, if they lose all these channels and you want out you'd better be ready to shell out the $100+ for early termination fees. Time Warner is on my last nerve currently. I am soooo tempted to pull the plug on them.

I tried calling earlier and it was just straight busy and you couldn't get through.

I don't have a contract any longer. I can live with out the rest of those channels but Spike is what puts it over the edge for me.

I'll be canceling my cable and see if I can get U-Verse here in New Berlin.

the prob is those channels used to be free to brodcast on twc and since the economy is shot they want to start charging all the cable companies to carry them even ur loved at&t, they will shut it down tonight at midnight they are asking for a 23% price increase for the cable companies to carry there ch. so we are in talks with them all day. They used to be free when they had plenty of advertising revenue comin in but alot has fallen off so i hope they dont go dark it will suck

you obviously dont get telecommunications monthly that pretty much gives a break down of all the providers and there profits/loses/contracts...I seen this viacom deal coming awhile ago.

I love it when people THINK they know, when they DONT know :rolf

but on the flip side, is TWC keep their head above water? yes.... are they jacking up there prices more than everyone else? yup...

twc is slidding down slope. now Im not saying AT&T is on a huge climb either. cancel rate and churn rate have done down dramadicaly, and coming the new year with new budget we are hiring more for every dept to do more installs...more installs = more repairs across the boards. and opposite of that TWC's cancel and churn rate has went up. because of shit line this ( remember the LIN issue? ) shit customer service, techs not showing up, HD selection, cost. etc... ( again, Im not saying AT&T is god to any of these either, nor will I back them on some shit they do!!!! )

twc has more customers than AT&T, becuase TWC can reach more customers.

ill stay out of this now like chad stays out gas threads.

LOS ANGELES - Millions of Time Warner Cable customers won't lose their access to MTV and 18 other channels after the cable giant reached an agreement early Thursday with media conglomerate Viacom Inc.

The two sides, citing disagreement over fee hikes, had threatened a damaging blackout at a minute past midnight Thursday that would have cut off shows such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "The Colbert Report" to about 15.7 million subscribers.

"We are pleased that our customers will continue to be able to watch the customers will continue to be able to watch the programming they enjoy on MTV Networks," said Glenn Britt, president and CEO of Time Warner Cable Inc. "We are sorry they had to endure a day of public disagreement as we worked through this negotiation."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Details must still be finalized over the next few days, the companies said.

Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman said the company was happy a deal was struck. Viacom had mounted an advertising onslaught warning customers of the possible blackout, taking out ads in major newspapers and Web sites from The New York Times and TVGuide.com featuring a tearful "Dora the Explorer" crying and clinging to her monkey pal, Boots.

"Why is Dora crying?" the ad read. "Tonight you will lose Nickelodeon and 18 other channels from your TV." It then prompted people to call their cable company to complain.

The dispute would have affected some 13.3 million Time Warner Cable subscribers, mainly in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas; and 2.4 million customers of Bright House Networks in Michigan, Indiana, California, Alabama and Florida.

Time Warner Chief Executive Glenn Britt on Wednesday had called Viacom's demand for a 12 percent increase in fees — an extra $39 million on top of the estimated $300 million it pays Viacom annually — extortion and outrageous given the recession. Viacom countered that the requested increase amounted to an extra $2.76 annually per subscriber.

Viacom had argued that Americans spend a fifth of their TV time watching Viacom shows but its fees made up less than 2.5 percent of the Time Warner cable bill.

Spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said that despite ranking high in the ratings, Viacom's cable networks' average daily license fee was 65 percent lower than that of networks run by The Walt Disney Co., News Corp.'s Fox, Time Warner Inc.'s Turner Broadcasting System and Discovery Communications Inc.

Analyst Michael Nathanson with Bernstein Research said Viacom's channels had been "underpriced relative to their peers."

Public carriage fee disputes of this scale between a programmer and a cable operator are not that common, especially when there's a threat of a blackout, said Derek Baine, senior analyst at SNL Kagan in Monterey, Calif. Typically, both sides agree on contract extensions as they negotiate on terms, he said, and any blackouts don't last long because TV operators get calls from outraged customers.

One prominent carriage fee fight in recent years was in 2004, between Viacom and EchoStar, the former name of Dish Network Corp. Shows were dropped for two days.

In October, Time Warner Cable wrestled with LIN TV Corp., which operates local TV stations affiliated with NBC, CBS, Fox and CW. But this time, Time Warner Cable faced Viacom, the largest cable programmer, not a small independent with a handful of channels.

The channels in the dispute were Comedy Central, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul and CMT: Pure Country.

Viacom shares rose 88 cents, or 4.5 percent, to close at $20.12 on Wednesday, while Time Warner Cable shares fell 31 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $21.45.

I kinda agreed

TWC cancel and churn rate TRIPLED in the past 2 months, whereas AT&T's cancel and churn rate cut IN HALF.... ( thats a HUGE diff )

this also put in consideration that TWC has 13millionish, vs AT&T's 1.3 million.

saying AT&T will NEVER catch up.... might want to bite your tongue on that ( not saying this to defend them..they just pay my bills ) ....once their is more of a consumer base...more dslams are put into place...once I/we test VDSL2 and pair bonding more, and releasing some other stuff that I can't let loose yet. just give it about 3-5 years we are shooting for 3m for before 2010, 7 for 2011 :)

but all I have to say...cable and satellite look out :)

and to the guys I talked to about testing things....check your PMs in about 3 weeks

Beats me. I called TDS once and they said I was 400ft from being able to get it. Also ran my address last week through the AT&T site last week and they said no too. I'm like 10 blocks from hwy 100 so it's not like I'm in some weird part of the city

you obviously dont get telecommunications monthly that pretty much gives a break down of all the providers and there profits/loses/contracts...I seen this viacom deal coming awhile ago.

Thats why time warner is trying to sell their cable division:durr

For what it's worth, I have had nothing but great service from TWC. I have had their cable, Road Runner, and phone for 20 years, or as long as the products have been out. It always works, and works well. Anytime I have had a minor issue, they have come right out and fixed it. I have walked into any of their stores to upgrade equipment, etc. they just hand you another one no questions asked and little or no waiting time at their stores.

Is it expensive - yes. I haven't found the numerous offers I get in the mail from the competitors to be much cheaper though - not once the hook you in trial periods are over and you add all the taxes and fees and other shit just like Time Warner hits you with. For me, you get what you pay for and I haven't seen anything that much cheaper enough for me to change from something that I know works and works well and that I've had great service with.

After leaving WI a couple years ago and getting the run around, customer service issues, and service shortcomings with my Comcast, I miss TWC. I never had a single problem with their installs, with getting my bill lowered to meet other introductory rates of other companies, or getting my bill paid (all problems I have had with ATT home/cell service).
