I use to go up to Tower road all the time with my brothers and friends back then. Thats when it was actually fun and you didn't have to worry about anyone pulling a gun and shooting you cause' they were a sore loser.

Nice Nova, I however don't remember seeing it up there.

I wish I was older to see some of the street racing back in the 70's and 80's and not this ricer junk.. I still have a rubber ball the size of a softball from St. Paul Ave. in the mid 90's I had in my room as an air refreshener!

It is great to hear that many of you old timers (hell I'm one now too) have fond memories of Tower. Check out this link for a "racers biography" that I worked on with my Dad. In the story it tells about the night that I ran Scotty from Fast Times (a real 10 second Camaro street car).

We used to get the group together at Dave Senderhauf's hosue in Waukesha and do a little "test-n-tune" off the stop lights all the way up to Milwaukee (about 30 miles). "Dyno" Dan Jansen (Charger), Tony Crisostomo (1979 Camaro), Kevin Poppy (1967 Firebird "The chicken"), Tim Jackus "Gray Nova"), Bob Hood (1968 Nova or 1968 "yellow truck"), Dave Senderhauf jr. & sr (1967 Buick).

Then we we got close we'd pop the trunks & add in the race gas, turn on the bottle heaters (ya we had those back then) and test the nitrous system before we rolled into Tower (ask Tony about some of those test runs in the industrial parks at 130 mph). The hood would always stay shut once we got there.

Check out this link for a cool story http://10wideracing.com/category/street-tales

shoot, I remember running at tower in the mid to late 90's and going up there to watch before then...Seeing scotty's yellow malibu, sams mustang, this real sweet buick regal that was a total sleeper, amongst others.....I did a majority of my running at st.paul with my escorts and the Shelby GLHS (yes escorts, I ran two up there, both with hairdryers and twin cams) at about the time that the import scene was just getting big, about the time the Tri had his acura, then going up to tower or florist if things got too heated........those were the days when highway was actually fun. We would meet up at Mc Donalds, Omega, hales park and ride, amongst other places, do some laps and then go to the races in bg packs. Those were the days

I came into the scene right at the end, and remember seeing some nice cars up there. Hey, here's a question for the "old fogeys" in here... Does anyone remember the brothers with the GN? anyone know what happened to 'em?

For the people that didn't know, there used to be two brothers that would cruise highway and at a couple of the "spots" back in the 90's... two brothers that had some sort of disability, and didn't work... They got money from the state that they just kept dumping into that GN. Looked stock, but the transbrake that they used to launch with off of stoplights disproved that. :wow Seeing that thing in action is what gave me my love for the GN.

Sam, you nailed it right on the head. Those were the two brothers I was talking about, with the hand controlled GN. I just remember rolling up next to them on HWY and national one night... told him to launch it, as I've never seen one of these in action before. He locked the transbrake, spooled it up, and took off like a bat out of hell with both of the brothers laughing the whole time. :rolf

I'll definitely say that I miss the good ol' days... I mean, I can't talk from the era that some of you are, but from the war stories, wish I could of been around in the early 80's to see some of that action go down. And, I definitely agree that the people out there now-a-days should see how it used to be. :(

i made a error...the NSRA STREET MACHINE NATIONALS were in 1979 in Milwaukee at state fair park....car craft was from 77-80 at Indianapolis fair park...we went down fro them as well...the cops there are worse then west allis....they had dogs...then they moved the car craft nationals to ILL......after what had happened in milwaukee ,west allis contacted NSRA and said no more here...soon after , the street machine division was canceled from NSRA.....later in 1980 they had a street machine national event in Madison....

we sat in the red barns parking lot(now known as oscars) during the nats here....alot of nice iron came from all over to come to milwaukee for that...now..you can't get crap here...

I got my dad to tell me some stories tonight about Tower when he used to run there. He said they would park their trailers at the "finish line" so they could load them up right away and get out of there quick if any cops showed up. He said they never would have any problems them and back then there wasn't really a good racing tire that was approved for the street, so that's why they always loaded them up on the trailer.

He said he mostly drove his Mustangs down there and of course the Pony Express. He claimed he never had a cute little nickname or anything though.

That place was golden in the early/mid 90's.

Yep! 351 Cleveland, Doug Nash 5 speed with a 3.25 first gear and a 5.67 in the rear! TIG welded cage when built in, I think 1980 (Mr. Rupert could confirm) 14X32 car with ladder bars and housing floaters. Mechanical (cable driven) tach with tattle tale. Heavy-ass TRW pistons, FORD RODS AND CRANK, big roller, shifted when it nosed over!! Tach read 9800 after one pass:headbang NO BULLSHIT!!
Better than that is when I did the 93QFM cruise and put the wheels in the air about 4ft on Wisconsin ave!! That car hooked like a Las Vegas prostitute:rolf

those were the good ole days on tower..and before that was built when calumet was iused in the mid 70'-80's.....who from waukesha had the green buick...65-66 i think it was....
i remember going there and there would be more people then at GLD...well maybe not that many...but a shit load , i mean a shit load of people down at the starting line and in other parking lots along tower..IT WAS THE PLACE TO BE FOR YEARS.....Dusty's camaro....WARDS Chevelle....Scottys(R.I.P.) Camaro from Fast Times...AND LETS NOT FORGET Carl(R.I.P.) Camaro...Donahue and his car...Brain METZ and the Malibu..what a ride that was..someone had the PRO STOCK KAWI BIKE......soo many guys from back then..but can't remember them all, but i'm sure the names and cars will come to me....all i had back then was my POS Monte on spray....but i got along with everyone back then...wish i could relive just one of those nights again...

the best of times in the days of past...they will never ever be like that again...i'm glad i was apart of it...and made the friends i have today from those days...

always Wauk vs Mil....Wauk vs Falls..always a good time..never an argument that lead to blood shed....then we would go to 73rd and run as well in 90 as well as Tower...hell i have a tower street sign that we borrowed...

and now the friends i have today from these times with cars....cars def brough dif groups together and fun was had by all..and a little money in your pocet at the end of the night if your guys won....i tell sean about those days all the time...

It was pretty fun. At it's best/worst it was like a circus. A hundred people standing along side two fast cars doing side by side burnouts getting ready to race, then running full bore down a public road loaded with spectators. It's amazing nobody got killed. WAYYY too many people and too much trash (empty beer cans especially...) being left on the industrial properties is what ultimately led to the downfall of Tower as a regular hang-out.

That sounds so cool. I can kinda imagine it, when I hear the stories about the "old days." My mother used to hang out with the car scene during the mid 60's, and tells me about how it was, and I have had friends that told me about the 70's and early 80's. I really cannot express how much I feel like I was truly born in the wrong era, and missed out on all the best times. I love very much to hear the stories from the ones who were there, though. If I ever meet you in person, I would love to hear more about those times.......

you know, we can still create new stories!! I know if in 15 years I ask "Hey you remember the YELLOW wannabe steeda that over the course of a year, like EVERYONE on BCM raced and beat" everyone will remember it. Or "hey do you remember that one early night up @ Culvers where that little CRX went ripping down the isle at full bore, and almost went into the front windows of Aldis, cuz it couldn't turn, and somehow made it around the corner?" some will remember that.

Back in 1989 or so he had a badass little white AWD turbo eclipse w/ Nitrous, when I had my '71 Nova and we used to race on Theo Trecker Rd. off the HWY..
