does anyone on here plow snow for $$$?

what kind of rig do you recommend for residential use?

i plow at work with either a 07 GMC sierra or a 72 ford f250 hi boy.i prefer the ford because it is just unstoppable in any snow. the GMC is nice. but they are both just to big to do a nice job on driveways and tight spots.

i have been kicking around the idea of starting a snow removal business for years now.
i just might jump in but what should i buy.

Personally I'd think a Wrangler with a Plow and a Salter would be the thing to get...

They're agile, and can fit just about anywhere...

^ YES

Any Jeep with a 6-7 ft blade would be ideal for doing driveways or small residentials. If you want to make money pushing snow, get the toughest truck you can afford and the biggest blade the truck can handle. Industrial plowing is where the BIG money is at.

Eric is right, commercial is where the money is. The only way to make good cash in residential is to get a bunch of houses with in a few blocks. Getting bunches of houses close to each other cuts down on drive time. Having houses all over the city is a waste of time.
The wrangler will get stuck more than you think. Get a standard cab truck with an 8' plow.

Agreed... I use to use a K2500 HD X-Cab Long Box with a V-Plow at EVS... That thing ROCKED! There wasn't anything it couldn't push...

When I worked at Boucher Ford we had a F350 Crew Cab Long Box Diesel with a V Plow and Salter. It was just too big to navigate the lot without hitting something :rolf And every time we'd plow something bad would happen...

I plow with my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab, threw on a western conventional mount plow 7.5ft , paid $400 for the plow, quadrupled my money doing 1 parking lot last winter, (last 2 months of the season) I even made myself a set of wings for the plow, best thing i did.

i like the jeep wrangler idea but can you fit a snow blower in one?
V6 or V8?

Slow Joe

Wrangler I6... And yes you can if you don't have a salter on the back... Take out the back seat and you're good to go.

OR if you have a salter that swings to the side or is easily removable.

You already have a Jeep, get yourself a snobear from sams club or lowes for $1000 or a Homesteader by Fisher or Suburbanite from Western, probably $2500 each.

My 5/24" snow blower fit into my old XJ if I folded the handlebars down and I could load it by myself. It'll fit in the WJ but the truck is a piece taller and my back seems to be in a constant state of hurt now em days.

I would just get a nice snow blower and use that, thats what I done anyway. I mostly help out my mother over by you's.

Deff the I6. An awesome plow rig would be an 03+ Rubicon model with factory lockers front and rear. It's a fairly heavy rig. My dad plowed the schools of South Milwaukee with his YJ for over 10 years. That thing was awesome for the small drive ways, walk ways, and everything in between. Even touch up on the large lots.

Wranglers are extremely maneuverable.

It sounds like he wants to do more then just his driveway, and the manually adjustable angling really cracks me up. You would have to hire a mexican to ride around on the hood adjusting the plow for you.

I have a question about this type of junk, are SFA trucks superior in every way to IFS trucks as far as traction and going through snow ? Ground clearance and tyre size being equal.

Standard cab longbox 2500HD (or any with a 9.25" front axle) and lockers front and rear.
87-91 K5 Blazer with lockers front and rear.
87 K10 Standard cab short box with lockers front and rear.
93newer Jeep YJ/TJ with lockers front and rear.

Notice a trend? Short and lockers.

Solid axle is why your ford push's better than the chevy:

7' blade can be angled to illegaly do sidewalks, a standard cab gets me in ghetto packed 4 family building, does alleys and fits in any driveway. In the hood I have to navigate tight dead cars in there lots with no issue. An older gear driven t-cased, solid axle v-8 is pretty unstoppable with skinny tires (no wide late model 245/60's, 75 or 80/85 series tires). Another plus of old Dana axled vehicles is you go thru them and forget about CV shafts and aluminum t-case issues all winter, maybe a u-joint a year if you beat the hell out of it.

Man that old Ford he runs has 30 year old bias ply mud tyres on all 4 corners, I think they are mostly bald but still have the big side lugs and 8 or 10 plies, pig farmer stake sides and a tie rod and tailgate to keep the bedsides from flapping in the wind. What a freakin beast, puts that Chev IFS job to shame pushing a pile too I bet.

Actually he's wrong its the 73-79 style and has to be a 77 cause it has a Modified in it.

Honestly if I could find a truck like that with a plow for $1500 I would buy it without a plow maybe a grand. Pretty few and far between trucks today, especially roadworthy ones. I would daily drive that red 77, then again I dont care about drivin JUNK. :shades

Super LOL at the snowbear

I have the snowbear. It works good doing my 250' drive.....but I would NOT push it more than that. Last year my drive was drifted over 2' deep and it took care of it...just took a little more time. Last year the winch pulled right off the plow...snapped the HUGE :goof 1/4" bolts that were holding it on to the winch mount. It's a decent plow for just doing ONE driveway. You're not even supposed to drive with it on...lol. Next year I'll be getting a small sno-way plow.

This is my first year plowing with my own truck but I used to go out plowing with my dad all the time when I was a kid. He held all his own accounts doing mostly commercial lots charging by the hour. I was going to go that route but in the end I got a sweet deal as a sub contractor for a local land scaping place. He pays me more than I was going to charge and I don't have to hold any contracts. If you want to push alot of snow the key is having alot of weight and plenty of power. Right now I only have 600 lbs of sand in the back but I will be stepping that up to 1000-1500 before we get a big storm.

We've used a snobear to plow my parents driveway for 10 years, Was able to keep the blade in one direction for the whole driveway. Worked great as we had a 3500 dually if the snow was really that bad. Since the Dually broke, we've sold the snobear and its still working.. and upgraded last year.

The new truck driving slower and with the V plow has cut my plow time more than half to do the same lot!

PonyKiller87
12-05-2008, 11:00 AM
You can put a plow on justa bout anything if you really want to, its just a matter of if it will be able to do anything or not. On one of the plow forums someone posted a pic of brand new tundra at the dealer being sold with a 8' boss v blade. One of the first posts was from a Boss dealer that said he wouldn't sell that plow for the application because of the weight. But it didn't stop the dealer from doing it and selling the thing.

Oh yeah just another though that I felt like dropping in here. Putting a Poly / Plastic plow on a truck to keep it light enough for the truck to handle is a bad idea. The weight of the plow is what makes it really scrape the ground clean, so if you cut the weight of the plow by 50-75 % alot of time your just going to push over the snow rather than scrape down to the pavement.

Anakonda69
12-05-2008, 12:15 PM
poly plow would work if you didn't wait till there was 10" to plow. plus the snow pushing against the plow helps keep the blade down. i wouldn't say to put one on a truck your gonna do heavy duty plowing with but for driveways and small jobs it would be fine.

call me stupid, but small wheelbase vehicles tend to be worse in snow. i've driven in a wrangler or two in snow, they held their own very well, but i wouldn't want them for plowing anything more then a sidewalk! when we tried to do a driveway it just didn't have the grunt to get it done, the weight and length to keep a pile of snow moving. like i said, it's pretty much unstoppable on light snow, or sidewalk or something, but i wouldn't dream of trying to plow anything substantial with a wrangler

The western suburbanite has the "Scrape Lock" feature and Hinikers Homeowner series has a patented scissor lift system which adds down pressure on the blade. Most smaller plows now have some sort of additionsal downward pressure on the blade to make up for a lack of weight....especially when back dragging.

Jsho13
12-05-2008, 11:53 PM
The pic I posted is of a poly plow. Works great for driveways and scrapes everything clean. The only problem we have had when pushing 12"+ of snow is that it goes over the top of the blade because it isn't as tall as a normal plow. It just has the float feature and seems to scrape everything clean the first time. It's got some weight to it, but I assume it's nothing compared to a steel blade. Back dragging is a completely different story, you are better off getting your shovel out.
