first started off with swappin out the broke trans for a new one

heres the trans painted black
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00427.jpg

then i decided to get a clutch with lightweight flywheel
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00428.jpg

then I came across this on megasquirts website
Spectre EMS pro
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00430.jpg

boxes of parts in the car
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00431.jpg

Picked up some 95-99 toyota cavalier tail lights
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00432.jpg

then me and my buddy(in the pics) decided lets install the EMS
so here we go. break down of the spare harness
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00433.jpg

cutting and tagging wires 1 by one at the computer connections
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00434.jpg

all the wires tagged, abs and a/c stuff removed
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00435.jpg

heres all the connectors for the engine sensors and stuff
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00436.jpg

depinning the fuse/relay box
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00437.jpg

laying out the wires to create a new harness
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00438.jpg

so far knock, tps, coolant, and IAT sensor wires ran
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00439.jpg

starting to tear the dash down
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00441.jpg

dash stripped down of the wire harness and the new EMS harness put in
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00442.jpg

the havok of a dash harness
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00443.jpg

EMS harness ran thru the firewall with boost line for onboard map sensor
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a320/hewmack/red%20cav%20pics/DSC00444.jpg

then thru out the night we decided to blow off a air bag for fun. so I taped it and here it is.

interesting to say the least, what did you use to depin the connectors? Ill be running megasquirt next year, but havent found a convenient way to salvage the connectors.

Z Speed

we only depinned the relay/fuse box as were going to reuse it.

the whole harness we got a wire diagram and cut 1 wire at a time and tagged it. then after they were all cut from the OEM computer connector we then untangled the wires making sure the tags stayed in place. then once done removed any excess and then took everything to the car and plugged everything in. then started routing the wires so that they were clear of anything moving and neat. then started tapping it all back up then once done the loom from the OEM harness will be used to recover it.

I have to add that most newer cars now and days oem harness run front to back and since I removed the dash and engine harness. I have to rewire in the headlights, tail lights, power windows, radio, and HVAC.

I also need to figure out how to wire up the power and charging system of the car yet.
the alternator and starter wire up has got me confused right now as im unsure how to wire it in.

if anyone has input on any of that it would be appreciated

30k miles and 3 transmissions later at 3 grand a pop i gave up on it. So i went back to something I know like the back of my hand. plus its common for the f23 getrag that I swapped into the cav to hold all the power I could get out of the car. No one that I know of has broken one yet from sheer power. only thing ive seen is them wear out (syncros go bad) and they break from stupidity..

GM failed to have the proper mounting on the cobalts drivetrain.

You can get the weather pack and multi pack, extraction tools, crimpers and new terminals anywhere on the internet for a decent price.
I have used a small piece of wire in a pinch.

this is from the outside looking in, but you can pick up a cavalier for dirt cheap first off. second, the ecotec is pretty tuner friendly, the chassis is cheap, you can lighten and modify it all you want. after that, aftermarket parts abound, i do believe a GMPP supercharger kit costs under 1000. you can end up with a pretty quick street car for not a lot of money

srt4eh
12-03-2008, 09:20 PM
I'd compare buying a cavalier and modding it to buying a neon and modding it. May only be 4 cylinders but you can have fun and make some decent power.

the cobalt was putting down 438hp 392tq with a gt30r turbo. it is now back to stock, like i said ive gone thru 3 trans 2 of which the bell housing cracked right around the front mount when i launched at GLD and the other I blew 3rd gear up.

and if anyone didnt know already this car doesnt have a ecotec or plans of having one.

most of you should know or heard of the LD9 Twin Cam and the Quad 4
well im doing a hybrid motor. based off the LD9 motor im swapping in the oil pump in along with the cams, cam towers, lifters, retainers and couple other things to make the valvetrain sturdy.

after I get the EMS and everything working on the car im gonna start with the turbo/motor build. then im going for 500+ hp

aeromotive 1000 fuel pump
fuel cell like a 12 gallon one
cage
and few other provisions

yep that is nicks old car. weird watching it through all the changes. The 2nd owner bought that motor that is currently in it out of my old green cav. That was my orignal 135k miled stock motor i sold for 100$. still Ran low 15s still with heavy rims haha. That wasnt the motor that i had s/cd though. which my green car is now sold to brians brother and currently sorta de modded. i sold the s/c , meth injection set up years ago :( , then sold the car for next to nothing. ahh well.

anyways,,, Good luck with the project.

jake I wanna talk to your brother about E85. I wanna see what i need to do to the fuel system to make it work with the cav as i dont remember everything he said so if you could pm me his email or something that would be great. I know he had braided lines and if I recall correctly he had the fuel rail anodized. ive got a general understanding of it but more info from him would be great as all im finding is BS conversion kits which isnt want i need.

other words thanks for the positive comments and everything guys. At first I was kind of at a toss up of making this thread cause I thought I would get all sorts of bashing lol

luke-= i still have a 02 ls sport. nothing crazy really with that. wanted to s/c it. But having a built a new house a few years ago, $ can go elsewhere. Kinda of been there and done that thing. i am still rocking my grandpas taurus i bought off him, and a 04 ford explorer xlt we bought new.

curt- e 85. He runs a walbro 255 intank pump and a bosch 44 inline pump and a areomotive FPR. He upgraded to -8 lines(from his -6) and runs 1600cc injectors. He anodized his fuel rail.
E85 works great on his car. With his new set up, he had some knock on low boost. Ran race gas and it went away, then decieded to do the switch to E85 and start the tuning process from there.
So far he made close to 400awhp and only is running a 52% injector duty cycle. Best advise is do the fuel system right the first time so you arnt ripping it out later.

Good luck

It is pretty simple concept. Just make sure you have no rubber lines and the metal that the E 85 comes in contact with is coated somehow.

well my plans were to run a 12 gallon fuel cell with dash -8 feed lines and -6 return aeromotive 1000 fuel pump, and then probably 1000+cc injectors and if needed a secondary set as the stand alone is capable of running 16 injectors hi or low impedence. I wanna aim for 500-600hp but if if the available aftermarket internals arent capable i may have to dig further into my pocket to make it possible. I would like to have a 10-11 second car
