12-02-2008, 12:48 PM
QUICK PATTERN OVERVIEW:

No major changes. The forecast still looks pretty good. Not perfect, I still do not see any huge storms to impact the region, but after today, temps across the Midwest will run below average and some frequent chances for light snows will occur across the northern ½ of the region and the LES guns look to be put into high gear.

1-4 DAY FORECAST:

Things will be fairly quiet in much of the region for much of the day today. However, as we go through the day and into tonight, a clipper system will roll through the northern Plains and NW Midwest and bring some light snows to the Dakotas, MN, IA, WI, the UP and northern lower MI. The system looks fairly starved for moisture as it works through these areas, so most snow totals will be around an inch or two. The exceptions will be in the LES belts of the western UP, where LES will start up later tonight or early tomorrow and add an additional inch or two by daybreak tomorrow.

The clipper will then work through the rest of the Midwest during the day tomorrow and it still looks like it will be able to pick up some moisture as it works through areas like SE IA, northern IL, far southern WI, lower MI, IN and OH. As a result it looks like a pretty solid 3-6" is likely for southeast IA, the northern 1/3rd of IL, southeast WI and into the northwest 2/3rds of lower MI. LES will also occur in the LES belts of the UP on Wednesday. A pretty solid 2-5" is likely in most of the LES belts from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, with some locales possibly picking up more than 5" in that 24 hours time frame.

By Thursday it looks like most of the region will have quieted down, the exceptions being the LES belts, where another 3-6" is likely by Friday morning, with some locales likely seeing more than 6" fall in that 24 hour time frame.

Same thing for Friday, with LES being the main snow event. Winds will be turning more westerly and even west-southwest as we go through the day on Friday, which will quiet things down in most of the LES belts after 1-4" falls in the AM, but does bring the potential for a dominate band to hit areas of the Keweenaw generally north of Calumet.

Temps today will be a bit warmer than yesterday, with the freeze line making it to the southern edges of the Northwoods. By tomorrow, temps will be cooling and will run in the teens and 20’s for highs in Northwoods, with lows sub zero in spots and single digits and teens elsewhere. By Thursday the 32 degree line looks to be sitting in the southern Midwest where it will stay for Friday.

5-10 DAY FORECAST:

Another clipper system is still indicated to dive in out of Canada later Friday night and into Saturday. Like the feature tomorrow and Wednesday, it will be fairly starved for moisture and will thus produce an inch or two or three across the northern Midwest. It also does not look to pick up any additional moisture as it travels through the Midwest, so accumulations of an inch or two will fall in the eastern Midwest as well.

LES will get put back into high gear behind the clipper and it looks like significant accumulations of snow will fall in the LES belts of the UP and NWL MI from Saturday night through Sunday and into early Monday.

By Monday, another clipper type system looks to work through and bring an inch or two of new snow to the northern ½ of the Midwest, with a bit of light rain in the south.

A stronger system is seen for the middle of next week. It is still way too far off in the forecast to be pinning much hope on the exact details, but currently this system looks to develop and track a little further south. So that would allow it to tap into a better feed of Gulf Moisture and thus produce some heavier snows on it’s northern side. The current track indicated would put all of the Northwoods in the area of heaviest snow (4-10"), so it would be the greatest hope for meaningful snows in the Northwoods outside of the LES belts, but I really cannot caution enough that it is a long way off to be putting a lot of faith in, but will be something to keep an eye on.

Temps for the weekend and first half of next week will run in the teens and 20’s for highs in the Northwoods. Lows will be in the single digits and teens in most cases, perhaps even dropping below zero in northern MN and far northern WI. Temps elsewhere in the Midwest would range from the upper 20’s and low 30’s for highs in areas like southern MN, southern WI, southern lower MI and northern sections of IL, IN and OH to the 30’s and low 40’s elsewhere.

A note on the longer term forecast… It still looks as though the transition to a different pattern is underway (the flip). I need to remind folks that this change I talk about is more than just a change in the weather seen across the Midwest. Even more than a change in the pattern across all of North America. It is a change in the pattern that includes areas as far away as eastern Siberia. I will also add that the flip is not necessarily something that happens in the course of a few days. It may take more than 10 days for any kind of a large scale change in the pattern to completely unfold.

There have been some changes and I’d say that the forecasted pattern for the next week to ten days is about ½ way to what I thought might be the overall setup for this winter. It will be interesting to see if the pattern does continue on to those ideas I have or the setup for the next week to ten days becomes the main setup for the winter, or we see something entirely different come about! Always lots of unknowns out beyond day 7 in the forecast, but I can say that I am encouraged by what I am seeing happen at the moment and by what is forecasted for the future.

National Weather Service Bulletin 12/7/08- 18:00hrs:

The National weather service has anounced they are truly
unsure of anything, at any time, ever. From chief meteorologist Ben Babbling:

Its basicaly a lot of guessing, our aphiliates seak major advertising dollars and the hoax that we honestly understand a trend or even a science is absurd. At some point during the 50's as paid advertising reached programing television networks at all got comercialized, a way of drawing in people who have no life to listen too and talk about the weather.
