I have had a few Dells and Its time to upgrade. I have around $700 to spend and I need some opinions. Keep it based on personal experience not 3rd party info.

Best buy had/has a sale of their 17 inch laptop for $650, while there 15 inch is $700. I do wish the volume control was a dial, and not a touch button. Ah well, it looks cool.

250 gigs of memory, 4 mb of ram.

I've had good luck with Toshibas as well... Kristie and I were looking at one that Best Buy has a couple weeks ago... It was around $750ish... From what I've been told (by friends that aren't trying to sell me a laptop) stick with an Intel Processor over the AMD... I guess the AMDs are slower.

We got a 17" Compaq (HP) with the Intel dual 1.73s, 3GB of ram and a 200gig hd.. Came with Vista, been using it for about 6 months. Good battery life when we don't have it plugged in, capable for everything we need.

Despite the bad hard drive (replaced for free) this one has been awesome. For games and everything:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz
4gb Ram
Radeon 2600HD 512mb video card
250GB 7200rpm hard drive
Vista Home Premium

All for 419 bucks.

There is no need to spend upwards of $700 for a laptop unless you are doing hardcore gaming or photo/movie editing.

Buy the cheapest one you can find, uprade the ram yourself. So easy a child could do it!
It will be more powerful than you could ever need.

Vista has a few new features I've been using. Nothing big but nice for major rookies like me.

I have an Acer and it is a ginormous piece of shit. The dvd drive died after about 5 months, bought a different one and it doesnt recognize it. apparantly there is something with their motherboard or something, I dunno. Junk.

I have a Dell I paid $150 for. It has worked great so far and is plenty fast. I only use it really for internet. It has XP on it and that is also what I use at work but I prefer vista. That is what is on my pc. To me it is just more user friendly.

I bought the cheapest laptop I could find from Best Buy....a Gateway for under $400. (wanted something cheap that wouldn't bother me if it got messed up in the 'stan) I upgraded the ram and its amazing....no problems at all and I run Finale music arranging software as well as Photoshop CS3....often at the same time :)

Yeah that's a badass discount. If I could get $600 off that, I'd buy one too. Hell, I'd settle for a regular Macbook if I could get a few bucks scraped off it. Hook a brother up! :headbang

My kid got a Dell for school, worked so nice my wife got
a Dell for herself..liked that so much I got myself one!

For a little over $700 you can get one hell of a laptop.
I clicked every option on mine less silly stuff like a built
in porn camera and with a realy nice bag it was about
$800. Im on my 3rd or 4th month with it and its faster
than than any desktop I've used to date.

Keep an eye out for discount codes for Dell's online.
