What would cause my computer to randomly switch itself to "Work Offline" mode?

Every now and then a dial up screen pops up trying to dial AOL (which I only use for email, my ISP is Charter). When that screen pops up I can go up to File: in the top left menu of my browser and "Work Offline" is now checked. I dont do anything out of the ordinary, what is causing this?

Could be an error in system/hard drive. How long has it been doing this? Maybe restore to early day that this didn't happen. Could be startup maybe something got switched. All i can think of. Don't think virus would really do that because for it to work/do most harm would be connected to internet to send files/let people go threw all your stuff on pc etc.

start - control panel - internet options - connections - Dialup and VPN settings - choose "Never Dial A Connection"
