So my pc has been having trouble booting up since my new graphics card, sometimes it will turn on after many retrys and sometimes it just wont. Im thinking I may need a bigger than 500w powersupply. The fan went out on it 2 weeks ago, and for the last month I have been having randoms screen freeze lockups and the final time it went I got alot of noise feedback and it wouldnt power up unless i put the power supply on the 240v setting and right as I hit the power switched over to the 100v setting....its all very odd.Anyone have the hookups on pc stuff. Im lookin at newegg but I hate waiting 3 days. Any suggestions on a new power supply or maybe whats wrong with the comp? Thanks ahead of time :)

Most of the time your power supply is not outputting enough watts to be operating at it's most efficient level. Your just burning money sucking electricity and making an excellent space warmer.

What kind of video card is it? Chances are you will need something with with between 25 and 30 amps on the 12 volt rail.

Nvidia 9800GTX, and yes I have actually blocked off the heat vents to my room cause the pc already makes it 100 degrees lol

Thats insane. I know this sounds crazy, but I did it and it helped......... Reinstall XP. Don't wipe it out, just have it overwrite a fresh copy.

Granted I need to upgrade my power supply, but I am running a 9600GT OCd to 750/1000/1800, 1.75 gigs of Ram @ 533 (soon to be 4 gig @ 800) dual 80 gig HDDs, a wireless N card, a Soundblaster 24bit Live Card, as well as a DVD drive, powered by a slow, but good enough P4 2.8Ghz on a Full ATX, all with a wimpy 305w power supply.

Depending on what you all have, and your current PS, it could be something else.

BTW, I consider my card pretty stout, but yours is a beast, esp. if you choose to OC it.

I have one laying around you can have for $10. Its just a normal ATX P4 power supply though.

You need new power supply. The Graphics card needs at least 500watts of its own. And if the Fan went out on your power supply and still using it?(I read that right?) You are causing extreme harm to that current power supply and could cause harm to your whole computer/Graphics Card.

9800GTX vid card needs at least 450 watt or greater power supply with a min of 24 awps on the +12 volt rail.

I would order one of Newegg. Worth the wait can pick them up heck a lot cheaper then anywhere local. PC Power and Cooling may sound like off brand but have been in computer business for long time think its around 20+years

I highly recommend Seasonic power supplies. They don't have fancy blinky lights, wicked cool fan grills or other gimmicks, but they do have robust power on all the rails and a very low annualized failure rates. Their power supplies are frequently used in systems that go into medical and military applications if that tells you anything. They are pretty well priced too.
