View Full Version : Build your "different" car!

Build a car...but not a conventional one. IE, not just a different looking kind of car...but with an off-beat powerplant as well. It could be diesel, a relic, anything. Cost is no object, unless you want it to be.

My car:

Take a 1967-1969 Plymouth Barracuda. Black, with all the chrome accents. Some 17" Torq-thrust D wheels with an aggressive, soft tread.

It'll feature 4 wheel disc brakes, and a basic upgrade of the suspension (Big block torsion bars, poly components, 1 1/4 front sway bar, 1" rear, HD rear leaf springs, HD shocks). It'll also feature frame connectors and shock tower connectors, front and rear. The overall stance would be lowered

The interior will feature a basic, stock looking resto. A good head unit/amp/speakers will be tucked away, with a small sub also hidden away.

As for the engine, it'll be a 225 slant six. 9:1 compression, ported heads, custom HYD roller cam specing in the 218 @ .050 range. It'll also feature a .63 A/R turbo that should fairly easily help me reach ~ 500-550hp. For the block, I'd search for the rare, but findable all-AL 225 block. I'd use FAST fuel injection.

It'll be backed by a built 904 three-speed trans, with a "tight" 9 1/2 inch converter. It should be fairly tight at no/low boost such as normal driving, but would hopefully stall @ ~ 3000+ when boost builds up. I'd back this with a gear vendors O/D unit.

I'd use a very conservative gear ratio such as 3.23-3.55...

THAT would be my off-beat, "different" car build.

Probably a 62 Olds F-85 Jetfire. But with a turbo 4.0 Aurora engine instead of the 215 turbo engine. OD trans and 3.42-3.73 gears.

Car: Early 70s Ford Maverick

Idea: Build a Maverick with a pro-touring theme based on excellent handling and modern creature comforts, a true drivers car. Emphasis on keeping weight down for maximum agility.

Drivetrain: New Twinforce V-6 Turbo motor built up and turbos upgraded. 6-speed manual transmission.

Chassis/Suspension: Custom tubular frame with modern independent suspension, SLA front multi-link rear for optimal handling and decent ride comfort. Brake system of course would be upgraded to large vented disks at all four corners.

Interior: Sound deadening added(yeah I know adds wieght) and all nostalgic squeaks and rattles eliminated. A decent stereo installation, but nothing huge, with the focus on exceptional sound quality. Gauges, seats and steering wheel would be upgraded to modern components.

Exterior: Minimal modifications made to clean up the look of the car, like the one pictured below. Dark metallic gray body color with rear tail light panel in satin black. Tasteful billet wheels 18" or 19", similar to the ones pictured below. Hood, fenders, trunklid and doors in carbon fiber for weight reduction.

I'm still thinking that a 79 Ford Fiesta with a 'Busa engine would be the shizzle!

I wouldn't even need to build anything...It would just be a stock GC8 Impreza WRX & Impreza WRX STi 5 [Type-F] and call it a day.

1964-66 Ford 4x4 truck with a old GMC Diesel, maybe a 6-71.

BBC in a fox body 550 ftlbs should make it a rocket even on a mild setup. Then put some 17'' rims on it for the average mustang people:)

The car: 1969 Beaumont
The engine: OHC Pontiac inline six with headers, intake and four barrel Holley
The other stuff: Updated interior, sound system, paint, wheels and tires...probably Torq Thrust 16 0r 17 inch rims, not too over done
Why? Because it will cause people to go WTF!!!
This is a Beaumont

03-04 mystichrome cobra coupe... pretty much an all out drag car with a 6-speed yet and rootsie in the garbage in favor of a turbo.

Or

A mint 91' C1500 454SS with an turbo L92 and have it be bone stock looking/sounding, converted to 95-98 interior. Just a nice DD / pull truck. I always thought the 88-98 body style of the c-k trucks were timeless and still look good today when you see a clean example.

Easily pushed beyond 300hp with stock block, sticky rubber hidden behind
hub caps and widend steel wheels, larger sway bars and head up to Road
America and mess with cookie cutter cars until they laugh so hard they
ditch there cars (as you lap them).

Pontiac 6000 AWD version with a SC'ed 3800...not sure if you could shoehorn in a small V-8, otherwise that would be the ticket, an LSx type of motor even though it seems every retro fit is featuring one. No one would expect the car to do anything and it would be fun to roast all four tires (given it has some mods to the 3800).

Or a Chevy Citation X-11 with something similar but I prefer the "Gooley".

Cammer? Then make it two 101mm's!!

This is a simple choice for me...
A REAL 1969 Z/28, 4wheel disc option, fold down seat, deluxe interior, fiber-optics, basically a fully loaded, super-rare huge dollar car-

and put an all-aluminum BBFord with an F-3 in it and beat the phuck out of it!!:D

Jim, it would be my daily driver! 1300 hp is enough.

I always said it would be cool to take a zl1 camaro, and drop in a bbf. "Built like a rock, with a Ford block!"

There was a guy from Rochester, MN where I am from that had the 04 mysti. Had a hellion on it and everything. He blew the bottom end out of it at the track and sold it for right around $20,000 as it sat! Would have been perfect for ya Tom!!:thumbsup

Take a peak at it!

The SRT6 is a fun little car. People shite on it constantly, but besides the headroom issue, it was the most fun car to drive at the SRT Track Experiance (mind you we were not allowed to get the Vipers out of 2nd gear, lol). AMG motor FTW.

Similar to what I have in mind for my K3500.

I plan to add some remote mount turbos to the stock vortec 454/4L80e setup, truck has the heavy duty drive train to handle pretty much any amount of power, would like to chop it down from a long bed to a short bed, and generaly cut weight out where ever I can.
