As a wrench one of the few things I had never done until 5 years
ago or so is rebuild automatics. Now after reuilding/repairing several
I gotta say tearing down a 100+k mile 727 from a work truck is still
very surprising on how decent they hold up compared to later 4
speeds of Mopar/GM/Ford.

Tonights victim was my own 86 3/4 ton plow truck, beat thru piles
of snow by me, by the company I work for who's longest time employee
swears they naver had it touched. I was gonna freshen it up for the
upcoming snow season, rear discs show some wear as does the forward
skinny band but all in all I bet it would have run another 100k!

You new they were good trans'....Im sure myself with everyone I tear
down now :)

The 727 was the one and only good transmission to come out of Chrysler. They managed to fsck it up with the 999.

Maybe the only good AUTO transmission.

Maybe the only good AUTO transmission.

They made their own manuals that were good? Seems like every manual they ever made was a POS also. Even the G56 (6 speed truck) is a POS, even though they carbon-copied the NV5600 they still had to recall it before a truck ever left the dealership.

833 manual trans were great trans. Tough as nails, especially the 18 spline...even the weaker 23 splines can be trusted behind strong big blocks (though I'd wouldn't trust a 23 spline behind a 500ci job).

The 904 is another great trans too...doesn't possess the strength of the 727, but with a couple simple mods, can live easily behind most any small block (not really suitable for a big block since none were cast with big block bellhousing...but some adapt it for it never-the-less). Far more efficient as a trans vs. the 727 to boot.

The 998/999 was simply a 904 built inside a 727's case with a couple other less fortunate alterations.

Yeah, the A-833 was awesome, it was the manual I was thinking about when I posted.

904 internals have reached the point that racers are
ditching their 727s to pick up a few tenths by loss of
weight and as you said less HP loss. The 904 has about
the lowest parasitic drag of any doestic auto ever made.
Hardend inputs, aluminum baskets and true roller planet
setups make it a 60 pound trany able to handle 600+hp.

In building my 904/998/999 hybrid for my car I learned
more than I ever wanted to know.I managed to aquire a
1 of 6 prototype case void of any parts...thumbed thru
books and tore down a lot of differnt tranies to come up
with all the factory parts to build, just as chrysler would
have done because they were only building a test bed that
they later canceled. The 904 is the little brother of the 727
but it is truly 100% different inside and out, identicle in
design and operation to the point valve bodies/kits are
swappable with minor tweeks.

what do you guys know about the AMC 904s? I heard they are even better thatn the chryslers but share a lot of the same parts. is this true?

They are identicle inside, same part numbers. You'll see different spline counts on the input/output on 4x4's and lighter cars. I've got enough new and used 904 parts here to build 2 as well as a fresh donor from a 4.2 powerd 4x4 904 that works. Most of the AMC 904's were lockups, if ou know the year/model I can tell you if it was originaly a LU trans.

The auto in my drag car project is a 904, light and plenty strong.
