Is it worth downloading different firmwear for the wireless G
or should I ditch the Linkysys?

Any brands out there better than others? I like using my laptop
out in the detached garage....surfing car stuff of course ;)

Ive actually had very good luck with our Linksys Router. You also might try changing the broadcast channel. I think ours is set on 5 which is supposedly one of the strongest channels. Im no expert but I had read it somewhere a long time ago, seemed to help boost the signal.

Also, Do you have any 2.4 GHZ Cordless phones in your house?

My older Linksys routers were junk. I've got a newer WRT100 now that works like a champ, though.

As a matter of fact I do, sitting 4' away from the router.
Guess I need to do some Googeling on the subject.

A few times a day my connection* stops or nearly stops,
repowering the Lynksys always rests it. To confirm I
just went strait to my laptop today with no issue. Its
probably just the black electronic cloud that hangs over
this house.

*Time Warner/Road Runner works great when its working
as it should.

If your 2.4GHz cordless phone is on the same channel as your wireless router which is most likely 802.11G running on a 2.4GHz frequency, then the phone will cause interference with the router. Either change the channel on your phone or in your router settings and you can eliminate that as the problem.

You have to go into the router settings thru IE or Firefox.

Usally the web address is something like

Http or Https(if you turned on certain security options)

So Http://192.168.1.1 or something like that. It then should bring up a username and password box. Enter your password and it should get you into all your Router settings.

N is the newest form of wireless...it is like 4x the range and 12x the speed of a speed boosted wireless g.
