Can someone education me on what to look for?

I know there's 4 & 5 lug ones. Probably gonna want the 5 lug as the car will be a 99% street car but probably start autoXing come 2010 season. Which year ones have the 5 lug.

Will terminator wheels bolt up?

Any comon problems to look for in the higher mileage ones 75k+

Would definitely be a 5speed. Only mods for a while would be exhaust & termi wheels if I could find them.

What’s a good forum or place to find used ones?

Only looking to spend $5,000.

79-93 were 4 lug

94/95 (SN95) went to 5 lug with the body change. 96+ started the 4.6L

Only problems I've personally seen with higher mileage is oil consumption and loss of power. Nothing a good rebuild can't fix. And just like any older car, suspension parts and upgrades would likely be necessary.

www.corral.net , www.allfordmustangs.com , www.stangnet.com , www.mustangv8.com, and of course craigslist...

can always look around at www.mustangspecs.com as well, as if there's not enough fox guys on here to fill ya in. :rolf

anything 94 on up to new is 5 lug. 5 lug conversions are very easy to do and can be done cheaper with good salvage yard parrts. any 5 lug will fit for that car as long as backspacing is done proper, you may have to remove quad shocks also for that. trannys, and oil leaks primarily rear main and rear of the intake some have oil consumption too but usually due to being beat hard and no maint.

If you are patient you can find something very nice for 5k. Hell, Andy's cousin Jesse picked up a CLEAN un molested coupe around the 2k mark. The deals are out there, with the internet and what not, you just have more sh1t to weed through before you find the One.

Check Torque Boxes. (where the lower control arms meet body) they cracked up its beat on.
Rust by shocktowers by where exhaust hits headers. This is a BIG spot people try to cover up.
Look for a dent in the driver or passenger side hatch post, right behind rear side window, Its got a dent in it car is tweeked. Windshield gotta crack in it its been tweaked.
Make sure doors close nice
Hack job wiring, Hardwire the inertia box when you get one.
Get a mass air car, conversion kits are time consuming.
If ya wanna switch 2 five lug PM me to do it on the CHEAP. You will like them Parts are CHEAP and they run tuff for not much dough.

Well hopefully when I get home. A fellow/previous fox owner can come with me to check out possible buys. I'd hate to buy a pos.

The biggest thing that I found on fox bodys is rust and oil leaks....the usual places are the shock towers, the front of the floor boards, the hatch area, and around the wheel well lip. As far as oil leaks, the rear mail is a big problem, as well as intake manifold gasket leaks. The torque boxes ara another thing to check, like some one said, look to see if they are cracked. Usual things that are broke are the ash tray door and the center council lid latch....not real big deals but still...Best place to look is www.stangnet.com for an unmolested, good condition one.....you might get lucky and find a stock one around here, but dont hold your breath.....I think there was a real nice white one forsale on here recently......

Man I wish I could find one back home (for now) in AZ. I'd have no way of getting it back home though. :(

Well there is always a shipping company.....or for the right price (air fair, food, gas...) I would drive it back for you....wouldn't be the first time I drove a 5.0 a large distance like that, hopefully the problems I had with mine woont happen with the new one lol....

We'll see. If I find one of those "great deals" I'd be happy as hell. I'm already looking so we'll see!

Plenty of overpriced ******* garbage is more like it. One dude was selling a half wrecked convertible for 2k

You're almost better off buying an 94-95 nowdays for how ridiculous foxbodies are becoming.

All 4-eyes are carb'd stock...
79-86 = 4 eye carb'd
87/88 = speed density
89+ = mass air

85 gt was carb, 86 was speed density. also quite a few 88 cars were mass air.

Because Ford did not make a lot of them and everyone wants one now.

I thought 85 was the cross-over year for fuel injection. When I built my 86 I used a distributor for a carb'd 85 with a roller cam, not a distributor for a fuel injected 85. I may be wrong though.

Well I thought that you could get fuel injection on auto 5.0's even earlier than 86.....Just that 86 was the first year of the electronic version.

All 5.0's had electronic fuel injection :durr, I have never seen one from the factory with mechanical injection.

If it is an 88 from CA then it will hopefully have mass air. If it is a speed density car and you plan on going carb or adding a megasquirt I would say go ahead. If you want something that you can start out with bolt-ons find a mass air car. The speed density cars don't like any internal mods from my experience and from what I have heard from the mustang guys.

If you can finda a cheap notch in good condition jump on them they hold there value a lot more also. Notches look better than Hatches, just my opinion. And I have hatches.

I concur. I don't think foxes are very good looking cars to begin with. They cannot be beat for how cheap they are, aftermarket support, NEW parts that are being developed still (amazing since Ford stopped production 16 years ago), large availability of used speed parts (craigslist is like Summit for a poor guy with a 5.0!). While I love the look of an IROC-Z, Camaros have the the whole mullets & on-jack-stands-in-front-of-a-single-wide stigma.
