Depends what you will use it for.

The xd .40 s&w is a great gun. If you want to plink at the range with a reliable (inexpensive) pistol go out and find a hipoint .40 or .45. I haven't had any problems with any of my hipoint weapons yet. Fun shooting when you know you haven't got a shit ton of $$ invested.

The Sigma is a cheap gun. There's no reason not to have one, but it's not nearly as nice as a XD40.

If it's just going to be a range gun go with a 9mm , cheaper to shoot

i have the XD but in a .45.......

:thumbsup

Rounds aren't THAT expensive if you wanna have fun with it.

personal defense and range gun. im pretty sure it going to be between a 40s&w or a 9mm the nice thing about the 9mm is that it clips 16 plus 1 in the chamber

Stay away from the Sigma, they=junk.

The XD is a nice piece, if you can buy a used HS2000, exact same gun, only $200 cheaper.

Taurus has a lifetime warrenty, and trust me, you will more than likely need it (in the recent Gun Tests magazine, which is 100% independant and funded only by subscriptions, it got an "F")

The 1911 is a 1911, buy a Wilson Combat magazine and it probably will never fail on you. With most other mags it may need some tweaking to qualify to put your life in it's hands.

I know others will hate me (Tony, this means YOU), but Gaston Glocks masterpiece is something that I would trust my life with right out the box!

I know you give the Taurus models an f but i have a 24-7 9mm that has never once jammed or misfired its one of the few pistols ive owned i can say that about. sigmas are garbage the xd- is a good all around cheaper handgun. i would always trust my like with a glock or s&w period tho

I have more than a few Tauri (that's plural of Taurus right:rolf) in my collection, and can honestly say I haven't had a problem. I think the 24/7 is their 1st gun that they designed (their autos are mostly old Beretta's, their revolvers based on Smiths) and the earlier ones had some issues apperantly(based on the Gun Tests article I read, I have no personal experiance with them). I mean they DO offer a lifetime warrenty, that's what always made me non queesy about their products. If a company makes alot of junk, and they offer a lifetime warrenty, they won't be around long!!

And yeah, Smith revolvers are great, SOME of their auto's are great (remember, the FBI carried 10mm Smith autos for years), but their Sigma line is like Scion is to Toyota, I mean yeah it's a Smith and Wesson, but not really:rolf:rolf

If your deciding between .40 and 9mm I'd personally go with the 9mm. .40 is pretty expensive compared to the 9mm or even the .45 (yes .40 is more expensive then .45).

I've had a .45 1911 and it was alright but I loved my Glock 22C (Police Issue .40 compensated barrel). My friend also has a 9mm Beretta 92F which feels like a nice gun from the few times I've shot it. I wanna get another Glock only in a 9mm this time, and perferably another Police Issue one. I also really liked the Federal Hydra-Shok rounds. Everyone I went to the police academy with used the Hydra-Shok rounds and liked them. Great for personal defence but kinda pricy for plinking cans.

I forget the make and model, but I wanna say it was a Sig chambered in .357 SIG. My buddy fired some 1300 rounds in six hours with out a jam. I'll have to find out the exact make, model, and caliber.

I had a Taurus .357 seven shot stub nose, like this on only mine was stainless steel. It was ported and would light up like Vegas when shooting it. I like revolvers because they are cheap and almost impossible to fail. Pull the trigger until it stops going bang bang bang and it goes click click click. Plus I like the classic look and feel of a stub nose.

Only thing I got now is my .22 Ruger MKII. Poor choice for personal protection, great for a pistol league, squirrel hunting and controlling the feral cat population control.

My next purchase will be an XD .45. I like the way it felt in my hand. Make sure it feels right. There are some ranges that you can test fire the guns so you can get a feel of whether you like how it shoots or not

i say get something you want. Not because the ammo is cheaper. If you have fun with a 9mm then get that but if you have more fun with a .45 don't just go with the 9mm just because the ammo is cheaper. Just get what you want and like. Just like cars.

i like the .40s&w because it packs a punch and price of ammo isnt that bad. but im still looking i might get the 45..

as far as personal defense goes.. the 9mm doesnt have the punch im looking for and odds are your only getting 3 shots off. the 9mm xd does hold 16+1..

so many choices.

i like the springfield .45. not to bad of kick for a .45 and enough power to stop a cracked out PCP sniffing low life at the door.
but i prefer a nice 12 gauge for home protection; point and click home security system that even the wife can use.

+1 for the XD either in .40 or .45. I've shot both (.45 was Formula_Diva's) and there really isn't much of a difference in the recoil. Obviously rounds are going to be more expensive, but there is nothing more fun than watching watermelons explode with some .45 FC Hydra-Shok's

My reasoning is, ammo cheaper so you'll shoot more. You shoot more , you'll be a better shot. A hit with a 9mm is better than a miss with a .50 Desert Eagle:goof
But get what you want because you don't want to play the "damn I should got this".... game

Go with the 9mm, you will end up shooting it alot more because it's cheaper. Then buy some of the best premium ammo you can, shoot some of it to make sure the gun likes it and it shoots where you aim, and you're good to go for self defense.

Nick
10-01-2008, 01:13 AM
I'd much rather have the .45 for self defense. I'd like to knock someone on their ass, not just poke them. :)

.45 ACP rounds pack more punch overall than anything else in these pistol ranges. I'm partial though. And who am I to talk really, I haven't ever shot anyone.
