I had to restore my computer a while back, my desktop runs XP and the laptop is Vista. The PC is ethernet into the wireless modem, the laptop is wireless.

I used to be able to access the files and CD drive on teh PC through the laptop but I cant get it figured out now. Can anyone help me with this, starting over from teh beginning I guess? Thanks-Dan

Are the files and folders shared? Can you see the PC from your laptop>

No, I cant even see it on the laptop. I remember I used to be able to. I have all firewalls turned off.

did you put the install disc in both computers, and or so the sync procedure?

No, I didnt. Cant I just detect the network and connect to it?

I am connecting to the internet just fine wireless, its just the PC that I cant see with the laptop.

if the desktop is not on the network than the laptop wont see it....install the install disc and see what happens

I dont see why it isnt on the network, is was before I restored the laptop.

Bringing this back from the dead, I still cant figure out the network. Everything worked before I restored the laptop, but now I cant see the desktop PC on the network map. No settings have been changed on the PC.

I have Network Discovery turned on, I dont know what I'm missing here?

Is the same workgroup specified?

Not sure? Where do I find that?

I assume it needs to be changed on the laptop, where do I look?

The laptop is Vista (I have nothing Vista in the house) but lets see if it is close to the same. I will explain it in XP and hopefully you can translate.

For me it is Control Panel-->Network Connections--> Advanced-->Network Identification. The workgroup should be specified in there. From there, for me, I have the option (a button) of changing the name or joining a domain, which in there is where you can change the workgroup.

Hope that translates to something in Vista for you.

Eh, not really. Vista is so "streamlined" that none of that looks familiar. Once I get into the Control Panel its totally different.

OK, I accidently stumbled on it. Hopefully it works, the laptop was under workgroup "WORKGROUP" and the PC is under workgroup "HOME". Gotta restart and see if it works.

Nope, now theyre both in the same workgroup and it still doesnt work. Ughh...

burn it to the ground.

We can rebuild it, we have the technology.

It is Vista's built in paranoia most likely. Looked around and found this.

Vista sharing
Open the Network and sharing Center and make sure the following are enabled or disabled:
- Network discovery = enabled
- File sharing = enabled
- Public folder sharing = either
- Printer sharing = either
- Media sharing = either

Windows Vista uses NTLMv2 only by default, you can change it to use NTLMv2 or the old NTLM as used by XP:
a) Load Secpol.msc
b) Expand Local Policies, Security Policies
c) Change 'Network Security: LAN Manager authentication' from 'Send NTMLv2 response only' to 'use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated'.
d) Close secpol.msc

If Using Home edition, then you will not have Secpol.msc. Load Regedit, goto HKLM\System\Control\Lsa and change LmCompatibility level from 3 to 1.
