I have had this computer for a while now and want to get a new one, what should I get and where should I buy it from?
Is 'Best Buy' the place? Any brands to stay away from?
We just use it for the internet and Tina's ITunes stuff, I don't need to hack into the Matrix or anything.... lol
Thanks! Sam

I gave my brother $1,200 and he built me a computer from the best of the best parts. Then just gave me his old computer. What a ****.

You don't need anything over $200. :)

People spend WAY too much on laptops/desktops these days, and only need it for 20% of it's capabilities.

Sad to see people spending over $1,000 on something that they only use to type up papers and update their facebook.
I can do that just as fast on a 10yr old computer.

Get a $500 Dell desktop and pay/bribe for Gold level support. It's more than you'll ever need.

You need to make a list of what you currently do with your computer and what you'd like to do with your computer.

I have $500 Newegg specials that run our department. And you'd be amazed what we're doing with these $500 white box specials. Or disturbed.

it doesnt matter then, just buy the cheapest one... if those really are the only things your are gonna use it for.

I paid 149 for my emachines desktop with keyboard mouse and speakers from best buy 3 years ago ( Black Friday ) and did nothing to it but upgraded ram and its still ticking away as good as the day I bought it.

damn that is cheap! my sister has an emachines... actually... i should take back what i said... my parents have a compaq, and the thing is an absolute pile... bully of bloat ware and runs slower than molasses... on the other hand, my sisters emachines is fairly clean for being a store bought pc and shes only asked me for help with it maybe a few times. where as my parents have asked me out tons of times to fix/tweak their pc...

I purchased over 800 Dell Optiplex GX280, GX620, and GX745 desktops at my last job. As far as I know, they've only had 1 motherboard (DOA), six power supplies (on the second gen dual core GX620s), and about a dozen harddrives fail. This is pretty good for machines that are on 24x7. And with Gold support there was no haggling.

At my current job we have Silver support. It sucks.

I do everything I need to on a $150 PC. It was worth about $650 4 years ago. Spend $500 today and it'll probably be fine for 4 years.

PCs get cheaper and cheaper every year. I can get a rig with over twice the power of my current setup for nearly half the cost.

I ended up buying one because I was way out of times on building them....its a Gateway and has been on 24/7 (minus power outages and whatever) for 3 years straight now without a single problem. Upgraded RAM and the video card.

As a matter of fact, my 2nd PC is a 2GHz white-box that I bought from Wrath on the BCM classifieds for like $35 (nice guy, BTW). This thing is lightning fast running Windows 2000 (my preference). I would put it up against any Windows Vista computer any day, in terms of responsiveness (you click the mouse and the program responds instantly, not 3 seconds later or after some delay..).

The funny thing is that Microsoft always makes the latest version of Windows unnecessarily more complicated (read: SLOWER) than the previous version, so if you always buy new and always buy the latest OS, you always get a relatively doggy computer.

Run a modern (anything from the last 6 years) computer with 1 or 2 generations prior Windows and you got yourself a rocketship. :thumbsup

Sam, if you are looking for a good, cheap desktop or Labtop, my neighbor has 10 PC's he is selling for CHEAP. $150-350 range for his PC's. He just picked up 4 new labtops and is unloading all his extra PC's in the house, along with some of his customer's old PC's. He is the I.T. guy for Waukesha Engine, and is a total car nut.

PM me if you want some info, and I will get it from him.

my little brother just built a computer. it has 2 terabyte harddrive, and got all his parts from newegg.com. he bought it in pieces and i guess spent less than half of what an assembled setup costs.
